Welcome and thank you again for taking the time to call bible break. This weeks question:
Within this short and simple question is a great lesson for us today. Here we have two brothers, Cain, the eldest and first child of many other sons and daughters of Adam and Eve (Genesis 5:4), a tiller of the ground. While his younger brother was a keeper of the flock, a shepherd. As it says in Genesis chapter 4, in the course of time, Cain brought his offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel the firstlings, or the best, of his flock. The Lord had regard for the blood sacrifice, but for Cain's fruit sacrifice, He had none, and that brings us to our question.
There is not much doubt, Cain expected his sacrifice to be acceptable, or else why would his countenance have fallen? (Genesis 4:7)--The Lord tells him to lift up you countenance and do what is right! Or sin is crouching at the door.
We know God is no respecter of persons-(Acts 10:34)--so what action did Cain do, or not do to find sin?
To Hebrews 11:1-4 we go to find the answer! By faith, men of old gained approval--well, we know in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing the word of God-so-notice verse 4 of Hebrews chapter 11-Abel's sacrifice was offered by faith! God told him what type of sacrifice was to be made. A blood sacrifice, in a like manner of the eternal sacrifice made by our Lord.
Notice:
Abel's sacrifice was better than Cain's. The sacrifice was better. Cain thought God would not care if the sacrifice was changed. Galatians 1:6-10 says that anyone, even an angel from heaven, that changes god's word is an athama or accursed. And, no, that's not good. Jude 12 shows the way of Cain and, no it's not good. So---heed God's word doing something because it feels right or is convenient is no excuse. Study to find what is the right way to please him and not ourselves.
There is a way that seems right unto man but its
end is the way of death!
(Proverbs 16:25)
