Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Who said, I have need to be baptized by You.

"Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming, says the Lord of hosts." (Malachi 3:1). A certain priest named Zacharias was married to Elizabeth, and while they were both elderly, she was also barren (Luke 1:5). As he was offering incense in the temple while the people offered prayer outside, an angel of the Lord appeared before him and told him they would have a son and then said, "And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine or liquor; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, while yet in his mother's womb. And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the lord their God. And it is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous; so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." (Luke 1:14-17) But Zacharias doubts the word of the angel, "How shall I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years." And the angel answered and said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God; and I have been sent to speak to you, and bring you this good news. And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe may words, which shall be fulfilled in their proper time." (Luke 1:18-20). So Zacharias could not even tell the people outside what had happened, but they could tell that he had seen a vision in the temple and he remained mute (Luke 1:21-22). After Elizabeth became pregnant, she was visited by Mary, after her fifth month and when Mary greets Elizabeth, her baby leaps in her womb, just as Gabriel had told Zacharias that he would. Then she was filled with the Holy Spirit and told Mary, "Blessed among women are you, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!" (Luke 1:42). When Elizabeth's time is due, she does give birth to a son (Luke 1:57)!

That brings us to our question, "Who said, I have need to be baptized by You,"?. And so this son came preaching in the wilderness, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" For this is the one referred by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight!'" (Matthew 3:2-3). Now he wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt for his waist and his diet was locust and wild honey and many people of the district of Judea and around the Jordan river came to hear him and be baptized and told them, "As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. And His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (Matthew 3:11-12).

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. But John tried to prevent Him saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?" But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he permitted Him. And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:13-17)

So there we have the answer to our question as the one who said, "I have need to be baptized by You," is none other than John the Baptist!

One might query why Jesus would want John to baptize Him since He knew no sin, but He set the perfect example for all mankind, "For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in His steps, "who committed no sin, now was any deceit found in His mouth'; while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; He Himself bore our sins on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed." (1 Peter 2:21-24) Let us follow His perfect example.

And oh, by the way-His baptism was a burial. "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in the newness of life. "For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection," (Romans 6:3-5). And so we are buried in that watery grave as Jesus was buried and rose again! May we follow His perfect example as it will save us. "And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you, not the removal of the dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ," (1 Peter 3:21)
