Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
And so Adam (930 years total) lived 130 years and fathered a son named Seth (912 years) who lived 105 years and fathered a son whose name was Enosh (905 years) who lived 90 years and fathered a son whose name was Kenan (910 years) who lived 70years and fathered a son whose name was Mahalalel (895 years) who lived 65 years and fathered a son whose name was Jared (962 years) who lived 162 years and fathered a son whose name was Enoch (365 years and then he walked with God) who lived 65 years and fathered a son whose name was Methuselah (969 years and died the year of the flood) who lived 187 years and fathered a son whose name was Lamech (777 years total and died five years before the flood) who lived 182 years and fathered a son whose name was Noah (950 years total and 350 years after the flood (Genesis 9:28-29))who lived 500 years and fathered sons whose names were Shem, Ham, and Japeth and then lived 100 years more and the flood gates were opened by God and all the cities of the earth as well as the earth itself were covered and only eight souls were remaining (Genesis 5:all & 7:13). So, if added correctly, the first dispensation from Adam to the flood lasted about 1656 years. Interestingly enough, Noah was still alive (living 350 years after the flood) when Abram was born, since he was born 292 years after the flood (Genesis 11:10-26)!
That brings us to our question, "What is the first recorded city?". Cain and Abel offered up sacrifices before God and while the blood sacrifice of Abel was acceptable, Cain's grain offering was not acceptable, since Abel offered up the sacrifice in faith (Hebrews 11:1-4) and faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17) we then understand God told them what type of sacrifice was acceptable and therefore the grain offering was not accepted by God, but God tells Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it." (Genesis 4:6-7) But Cain allowed his anger to consume him and he rose up and killed his brother and God told him, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. When you cultivate the ground, it shall not longer yield its strength to you; you shall be a vagrant and a wanderer on the earth." (Genesis 4:10-12) Now this may seem, on the cover, as a modest rebuke for the crime committed, but he was a lover of the soil, and the very thing he loved would not produce for him, and only until Seth and his son Enosh were born did men begin to call upon the name of the Lord (Genesis 4:26).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. And Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city Enoch, after the name of his son." (Genesis 4:16-17) So there we have the answer to our question, as it was Cain that built the first city and named it after his son, Enoch, so the first recorded cities name was Enoch!
Now you may be wondering where Cain found his wife, as many have. Remember that Adam and eve had many other sons and daughters. Adam was 130 years old when Seth was born. After having Seth as did all the generations of people that have been named which flourished over the earth (Genesis 5:4).
Let us not let our countenance fall and then not lift it up as Cain did and then not return to the Lord, but may we repent and turn to Him who grants us forgiveness and everlasting life (1 John 1:9 & 2:1-2 &25)!
