Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

Who wore a coat of many colors?

To Genesis chapter 37 we to find another generation unfolding with a story that stirs the mind as Jacob, the brother of Esau has 12 sons, the youngest two were born of the wife he loves, Rachel, and his greatest love is given to the oldest of the two-along with a coat of many colors.

His older half brothers know this and hate him for it:

Genesis 37:3-4 "Now Israel loved him more than all his sons because he was the son of

his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic. And his brothers saw that their father

loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated and could not speak to Him on

friendly terms."

Soon he has a dream and relates it to them-they are binding sheaves-and his sheave stood erect and his brothers sheaves gather around his and bow down to it. They are not happy to hear this. Then he has another dream, in this one the sun and moon and eleven stars bow down before him. Even his father rebukes him at the thought of he and his wife along with his brothers bowing down before his son. But Israel kept the saying in mind.

One day the brothers are pasturing their fathers flock and sell the dreamer into slavery. They cover the tunic with blood and tell their father he has been killed. The Midianite traders sold him in Egypt to Potiphar and soon became his personal servant, but then was falsely charged by his wife that he had attacked her. So he was sent to prison. But the Lord was with him and soon Pharaoh's cupbearer and chief baker were also thrown in prison-each had dreams and he interpreted the dreams, each coming true, the cupbearer to be released in 3 days and the chief baker to be killed in 3 days.

Two years later Pharaoh himself has a dream of 7 fat cows coming out of the Nile being followed by 7 thin cows who consume the fat ones and yet remain thin. No one can interpret the dreams. The cupbearer relates his dream being interpreted correctly and Pharaoh calls for him.

He interprets the dream as the 7 fat cows being Egypt's 7 years of plenty being followed by 7 years of famine. Pharaoh was elated and put him in charge of all the land of Egypt to put back a fifth of its produce to prepare for the famine.

The famine was extreme even in the land of Canaan and soon they ran out of food and Israel's Sons were sent to get some from Egypt. Being charged as spies, they are brought before the ruler of the land of Egypt and bowed down before him---yes---they bowed down before their own brother, whom they sold into slavery because of their own hatred and jealousy:

Genesis 42:6 "Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold

to allthe people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him

with Their faces to the ground."

So, we have the answer to our question, Joseph, the dreamer who's interpretations came true because he gave glory to God in the interpretation of the dreams. And even his own came to pass.
