Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
When Ahab became the king of Israel, the Lord describes him, "And Ahab the son of Omri did more evil in the sight of the Lord than all who were before him. And it came about, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he married Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went to serve Baal and worship him. So he erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria. And Ahab also made the Asherah. Thus Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel who were before him." (1 Kings 16:30-33). Jezebel had all the prophets of God destroyed except the one hundred saved by Obadiah who hid them (1 Kings 18:3-4). Ahab called the prophet Elijah, "'Is this you, you troubler of Israel?' And he said, 'I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and you have followed the Baals. Now then send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table.'" (1 Kings 18:17-19). Elijah challenged then to a duel and they called upon their gods to bring fire upon the sacrifice they had prepared with no results and after they had poured water upon the sacrifice prepared by Elijah, God consumed the sacrifice to which they cried out, "The Lord, He is God, the Lord, He is God." (1 Kings 18:39). Then Elijah had all the evil prophets killed by the sword, which did not make Jezebel very happy and sent a message to Elijah, "So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time." (1 Kings 18:20-46 & 19:1-2)
Now Naboth had a vineyard that Ahab wanted and so he told him, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden because it is close beside my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money.' But Naboth said to Ahab, 'The Lord forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.'" (1 Kings 21:2-3). So Ahab was depressed and his wife set up tow worthless men to falsely chare Naboth with cursing God and the king and they had Naboth stoned so Ahab got his vineyard (1 Kings 21:4-16). Then Elijah was told to tell Ahab, "'And you shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the Lord, "Have you murdered, and also taken possession?"' And you shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the Lord, "In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth the dogs shall lick up your blood, even yours.'" (1 Kings 21:19). When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and the Lord said to Elijah, "Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before Me? Because he has humbled himself before Me, I will not bring the evil in his days, but I will bring the evil upon his house in his son's days." (1 Kings 21:29).
That brings us to our question, "Who killed Ahab's ancestors?". Elisha the prophet sent one of the prophet's sons to anoint a new king over Israel, a captain of the army, who is the son of Jehoshaphat (2 Kings 9:1-5). As he anointed the captain king, he told him, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'I have anointed you king over the house of Israel. And you shall strike the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel. For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male person both bond and free in Israel.'"(2 Kings 9:6-8). So the captain, who was now king, drew his bow and killed the kings of both Israel and Judah and then he had Jezebel thrown down from her second story window and she also died and the dogs ate her so that she would not be buried so that prophecy was fulfilled, "In the property of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel; and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the property of Jezreel, so they cannot say, 'This is Jezebel.' (2 Kings 9:17-37). Next would be the seventy sons of Ahab were being cared for by great men of the city of Samaria.
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters and sent then to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, the elders, and to the guardians of the children of Ahab, saying, 'And now, when this letter comes to you, since your master's sons are with you, as well as the chariots and horses and a fortified city and the weapons, select the best and fittest of your masters' sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house.'" (2 Kings 10:1-3). When they balked at his first letter, he sent a second, "If you are on my side, and you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men, your masters sons, and come to me at Jezreel tomorrow about this time.' Now the king's sons were seventy persons, were with great men of the city, who were rearing them. And it came about when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slaughtered them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him at Jezreel." (2 Kings 10:6-7). So there we have the answer to our question, as the son of Jehoshaphat is Jehu who commanded that the sons of Ahab be killed!
Jehu fulfilled all that the Lord asked him to do as he had the worshipers of Baal killed but still did not walk in the Law of the Lord with all his heart as he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam (2 Kings 10:18-31). Let us stand fast with all our heart to the end for life eternal!
