Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

What king of Judah had a foot disease?

The sons of Samuel did not walk in the way of the Lord (1 Samuel 8:1-3), so the people told Samuel, "…Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations." (1 Samuel 8:5). This was not only displeasing to Samuel, but also to the Lord who told Samuel, "…Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being King over them." (1 Samuel 8:7). And so a king was chosen by God, a son of Kish, a Benjamite, "And he had a son whose name was Saul, a choice and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome person among the sons of Israel; from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people." (1 Samuel 9:2). Then the Lord tells Samuel concerning Saul, "…Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! This one shall rule over My people." (1 Samuel 9:17). When they are going to anoint Saul as king, they cannot find him for he is hiding by the baggage. (1 Samuel 10:22)

So starts a very humble beginning for the king of Israel, who was "…little in his own eyes…" (1 Samuel 15:17), as he even was working the fields after being anointed as king (1 Samuel 11:5). But as time goes on for Saul as king, so does his pride, as he does not fully listen to the voice of the Lord (1 Samuel 15 1-23).

So then David was anointed king and when he grew old, his son, Solomon was then anointed as king, but in his old age his heart was not wholly with God and the Lord said to him, "So the Lord said to Solomon, "Because you have done this, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant. Nevertheless I will not do it in your days for the sake of your father David, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son. However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen." (1 Kings 11:11-13). Then Solomon's kingdom went on to his son, Rehoboam, who listened unwisely to his friends council and not the wise council of the elders (1 Kings 12:1-24) and put hardship upon Israel who rebelled and the ten tribes of the kingdom split apart, to be called "Israel" and the two remaining tribes, Judah and the remnant tribe, Benjamin, became "Judah".

That brings us to our question, "What king of Judah had a foot disease?". After Rehoboamís death, his son, Abijam becomes the second king of Judah but only reigns three years as he continues in the sins of his father (1 kings 15:1-3). Then his son becomes king and reigns forty-one years, "He also put away the male cult prostitutes from the land and removed all the idols which his fathers had made. He also removed Maacah his mother from being queen mother, because she had made a horrid image as an Asherah; and Asa cut down her horrid image and burned it at the brook Kidron." (1Kings 15:12-13). His heart was wholly devoted to the Lord all of his days and he brought into the Temple the silver and gold utensils (1 Kings 15:14-15).

Once again there was war between Israel and Judah during his reign (1 Kings 15:16). The king then invites the king of Aram, along with gifts of silver and gold, to establish a treaty between their countries and that he break the treaty with the kingdom of Israel so that they would withdraw from Judah as Israel was building ramparts there, and the king of Aram does so (1Kings 15:16-22).

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa became diseased in his feet. His disease was severe, yet even in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians. So Asa slept with his fathers, having died in the forty-first year of his reign. They buried him in his own tomb which he had cut out for himself in the city of David, and they laid him in the resting place which he had filled with spices of various kinds blended by the perfumers' art; and they made a very great fire for him." (2 Chronicles 16:12-14).

So there we have the answer to our question, as it is none other than "Asa" the son of Abijam who had a foot disease, but he did not ask of the Lord to be healed but only relied on the physicians.

May we be as wholly with the Lord as Asa was during his reign, "In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls." (1 Peter 1:6-9)
