Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

Can angels sin?

As one searches the scriptures concerning angels, we can find some interesting things about them. First we find that they are created beings (Hebrews 1:6-7 & Colossians 1:16-17), they do not marry (Matthew 22:30), they brought the Old Testament scriptures to the Jews (Hebrews 2:3), some serve as messengers of God and use chariots and number in the thousands upon thousands (1 Chronicles 21:15 & Psalms 68:17), they worship before God in heaven (Revelation 7:11), they are more powerful than man for as Jesus walked this earth, He was "for a little while lower than the angels" (Hebrews 2:7), and they are ministering spirits sent out to render service to the saints (Hebrews 2:14), and we may even be found entertaining them unaware (Hebrews 13:2).

Try as I might, I could not prove that angels have wings by the scriptures, even though both the Seraphim and Cherubim do (Isaiah 6:2-6 & Exodus 25:20). But remember this, although they are not referred to as having wings, the Lord does not tell us every detail of things not pertaining to salvation, so it could still be that they do have wings and is not on a "need to know" for us, and the times that they are found before man without them being aware of it, they may have been transformed by the Lord for that encounter. It often seems that people only see angels as the positive light of purity and goodness who will usher the saints to paradise (Luke 16:22).

That brings us to our question, "Can angels sin?". As we have seen, angels do have greater power than man, and yet they are not "all knowing" as they "long to look" (1 Peter 1:12) into the physical realm of this earth and the unfolding of the events of the gospel and are in subjection to the Lord (1 Peter 3:22). Yet as we can see, angels do have the same ability given by God to them as man as they have the "free will" to make decisions to do as God has commanded them or not to as Satan and his angels made war with Michael the arch angel and his angels who stood with God (Revelation 12:3-9) and Satan was beaten and cast down to earth along with his angels.

The great deceiver, Satan (John 8:44-48), and his cohorts are waging a spiritual war with man (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) as they bring along a desire to trick men into believing a false doctrine just like he did with Eve in the beginning by changing one word, "you will surely not die" (Genesis 3:4) that God said. They still are ready to distort the gospel of God (Galatians 1:6-10) and will be accursed of God. As Satan tries to transform himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14-15), "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;" (2 Peter 2:4). So there we have the answer to our question as they indeed can sin and will also be judged for these sins just as mankind. "And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day (Jude 6).

So there we have the answer to our question as angels can sin and have sinned and the Lord will judge them on that day. And yet there are those who will worship a "created being" (Satan) who will be cast in hell! Go figure that equation. As for me, I will strive for the Lord. So, what do you think about those two different pathways-one to eternal death and one to life eternal? Don't be enslaved as a servant of Satan, but be transformed into the perfect way.
