Bible Break

11/09/2002

Thank you again for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

Who is the bride for Isaac?

Isaac, the son of Abraham and Sarah…the promised son through whom all nations would be blessed. And through Abraham would come the 'seed' of the messiah, Jesus Christ as stated in Galatians 3:16...

"Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say 'And to seeds,' as referring to many, but rather to one, 'And to your seed, that is Christ."

A beautiful story unfolds in Genesis chapter 24. Sarah has passed from this life and Abraham, advanced in years-asks his eldest servant to take an oath to look for a wife for Isaac in his old country of Mesopotamia where his own relatives may be found. Abraham says an angel of the Lord will be with him to help make his journey successful. So his servant takes the oath with the stipulation that if her people does not want her to come back, he would not be held to his promise. He takes 10 camels, some goods and travels to the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, home of Babylon. To the city of Nahor he travels and then camps by the well where the women come to draw water. He prays to the Lord that the woman who comes and he asks for a drink, not only offer him the water, but says she would draw for his camels also, would be the one he seeks. Even before he finishes praying, a beautiful women with a water jar comes by him and he says to her in verse 45:

"…'Please let me drink.' And she quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink and I will water your camels also.' So I drank, and she waters the camels also."

This gracious woman is the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham's brother, Nahor. An upon consulting her relatives-journeys to a strange land-to a stranger named Isaac, who takes her as his wife, and Rebekah comforts him of his mother's death..

And so we have the answer to our question…Rebekah…One of the many people on a journey to only be fulfilled through our Lord and savior.
