Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

What city in Greece has many devout believers?

Before Jesus was raised up to heaven and the right hand of God, He told His disciples, "He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight." (Acts 1:7-9). And so we have the church beginning in Jerusalem (Acts 2:all), and then to Judea and Samaria and the remotest part of the earth after Stephen was stoned and a great persecution came upon the church at Jerusalem, "Saul was in hearty agreement with putting him to death And on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Some devout men buried Stephen, and made loud lamentation over him. But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house, and dragging off men and women, he would put them in prison. Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and began proclaiming Christ to them." (Acts 8:1-5). This same "Saul" becomes as devout a believer as he was a persecutor of the church as we have seen (Acts 9:1-25).

That brings us to our question, "What city in Greece has many devout believers?" We begin our search to our question by finding Paul seeing a vision of a man from Macedonia saying, "…Come over to Macedonia and help us." (Acts 16:9). Soon we are following Paul to the town of Thessalonica and upon seeing a synagogue, as was his custom, he went in to teach the Jewish men and women gathered, and for three Sabbaths (Saturday-the seventh day of the week) he reasoned with them from the Old Testament scriptures by explaining and giving evidence that Jesus truly was the Christ who had to suffer death upon the cross and then rise from the dead. While some were persuaded, others out of jealousy, went to the market place and finding wicked men there, they formed a mob and stirred the city by saying, "These men who have upset the world have come here also; and Jason has welcomed them, and they all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus." (Acts 17:1-7). After getting a pledge from Jason and some other brethren, they were released (Acts 17:9).

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. Now these were more noble-minded that those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed, along with a number of prominent Greek women and men."
(Acts 17:10-12).

So there we have the answer to our question as the men and women of Berea a small city on the eastern side of Mount Olympus in Greece, were more noble-minded than those of Thessalonica, as they studied the scriptures to see if the things spoken by Paul were so. Interestingly enough, the Jews of Thessalonica found out about the success in Berea, "But when the Jews of Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came up there likewise, agitating and stirring up the crowds. And immediately the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and Silas and Timothy remained there." (Acts 17:13-14).

Are we as "noble minded" as those in Berea? We should also be looking to the scriptures to see if the things that we here spoken mirror the word of God and be ready to test ourselves to the word to be sure of our state with the Lord, "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-unless indeed you fail the test." (2 Corinthians 13:5) "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like the man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But the one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer, but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does." (James 1:22-25)
