Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
When Jesus walked this earth, there was no doubt in the minds of most people living at that time that Jesus walked in the flesh.
He sustained Himself with food and drink (Matthew 9:10), He slept (Matthew 8:24), was touched (Luke 8:45-46), He spoke as One having authority (Matthew 7:29), and He wept (John 21:35).
So the question of that time is still being asked by many today: Was Jesus just a man? To answer this question we will look at the books that cover the time that He walked to determine from the things He said and did to help us draw a conclusion.
That will first take us to the book of John chapter seven where we will see that even His brothers did not believe in Him as the Christ (verse 5), while the multitudes were arguing over Him as some said "He was a good man" others were saying "No, on the contrary, He leads the multitude astray." (verse12). Even the leading Jews marveled "How has this man become learned, having never been educated." (verse 15).
Others said "This certainly is the Prophet." Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?" Has not the scriptures said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" So there arose a division in the multitude because of Him. (verse 40-43).
And so the argument over who Jesus truly was continued.
John 7:31 But many of the multitudes believed in Him; and were saying, "when the Christ shall come,
He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?
Jesus told them, "You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me." (John 5:39) And so, let us search to help us determine what it is about this man that makes Him more than "Just a man".
In John 9:1-12 He healed a man who was blind from birth so that He then could see. Even that man recognized that no one had ever done that before (verse 32). In Luke 17:11-19 He healed ten lepers. In Mark 2:1-12 He not only healed a paralytic but He also read the hearts, or the thoughts of men who reasoned within themselves, "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?" (Mark 2:7). They charged He was putting Himself on an equality with God by forgiving the paralytic of his sins. They were right that only God can cleanse one of his sins. They just did not open their eyes to see who stood before them and the miracles he wrought. And along with many other amazing things such as casting out demons (Mark 8:28-34) , He raised a man, (Lazarus who was dead for four days) (John 11:32-46), a widow's son (Luke 7:11-17) , and a girl (Luke 8:51-56) from the dead. While many were amazed and believed in Him (John 11:45), others were more worried about loosing their place of honor and their nation (John 11:48), and planned to kill Him (John 11:53).
God sent His Son for men to see not only Him but the amazing miracles He performed and then for men to draw their own conclusions just as we can read of these events and draw our own conclusions today. We make our choice about Him even though we will not see Him on this earth by the events that are recorded in the scriptures. While people like Thomas who did see Him and yet demanded to place His fingers in the nail holes in His hands and his hand in His side to believe in this Jesus who was put to death on the cross and was reported to be raised from the dead before he believed. When Jesus comes before Thomas He tells him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." (John 20:24-29).
So the answer of this question is given throughout this article by the words Jesus spoke and the miracles He performed by searching of the scriptures to see if this Jesus is truly the Christ. The choice is left up to each of us. Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26). Good question! Now its up to you to answer. Is this Jesus "just a man" or did He lie to us about being the "Son of Man" (John 9:35-37)? He also says, "Sanctify them in the truth, thy word is truth. John 17:17. Is it truth? The leading Jews ask Jesus, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." (John 10:24).
Jesus had told them plainly as the woman by the well as say says, "I know that a Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when That One comes, He will declare all things to us." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He." (John 4:25-26) and, "I am the bread that came out of heaven." (John 6:41) and, "Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am." (John 8:58) and when they asked him to tell them plainly He said, "I and the Father are one." (John 10:30) So Jesus does not keep His deity a secret, but tells them openly and punctuates it with the miracles He performs:
John 20:30-31 Many other signs therefore Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which
are not written in this book; but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
And so the choice is yours. When Jesus asked the blind man, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered and said, "And who is He Lord, that I may believe in Him? Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him and He is the one who is talking with you." And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshipped Him. (John 9:35-38) . Will you believe and worship Him too?
