Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break, to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:
After the floodwaters abated in chapter 8 of Genesis, God tells Noah and his family in 9:1 of that same book to "be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth." God makes a covenant with mankind in the same chapter to never again destroy the earth with water. His mark is in the sky, the 'bow' (verse 16) will remind us of that covenant.
To chapter 11 of Genesis we go to find the remnant of people in verse one, all using "the same language and the same words". In Genesis 9:22-27 Ham sees the nakedness of his father, Noah, and was cursed because of it.
It reminds one of Cain and his offspring who look to themselves as do the descendants of Ham. One of them is Nimrod, Ham's grandson, who becomes a mighty one of the earth, "a mighty hunter before the Lord" as it says in chapter 10:9.
So, for our answer to today's question. Those men who directed the people, decided to make a name for themselves and to build a city and a tower of fired brick whose top would reach into heaven, maybe to be higher than any future floodwaters, no need for God to help them. Man, once again, only looking to man with his own knowledge for safety and security-spelling out the pride of man. In verse 5 the Lord comes down to see what, and please note, 'the sons of men' had built. The Lord says that as one people and with one language in verse 6 'now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.'
Think about that for a moment, for in this great country we live today, and, oh, how we have prospered, in so many ways, sharing in this melting pot, people's ideas, all speaking one language. So many good things, and yet so many destructive things, from the bomb to the teaching there is no God, so, guess what, look to yourselves. Ouch.. And so, the Lord confused their language into many different ones, and so, they scattered over the earth. And in verse 9 'its name was called Babel, because their languages were confused there.
Let us remember Him who created us and allowed the many blessings in this great and bountiful country. Open your bible and please Him.
Thank you again for testing your knowledge of God's word.
This is Bible Break, and have a good day.
