Welcome and thank you for taking a
Bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Jacob, the brother of Esau has 12 sons, the youngest two were born of the wife he loves, Rachel, and his greatest love is given to the oldest of the two, along with a coat of many colors. His older half brothers know this and hate him for it, "Now Israel loved him more than all his sons because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a varicolored tunic. And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers; and so they hated and could not speak to Him on friendly terms."(Genesis 37:3-4). Soon he has a dream and relates it to them. They are binding sheaves, and his sheave stood erect and his brothers' sheaves gather around his and bow down to it. They are not happy to hear this.
Then he has another dream. In this one the sun and moon and eleven stars bow down before him. Even his father rebukes him at the thought of he and his wife along with his brothers bowing down before his son. But Israel kept the saying in mind (Genesis 37:5-12). One day the brothers are pasturing their fathers' flock and sold the dreamer into slavery. They cover the tunic with blood, and tell their father he has been killed (Genesis 37:13-36). The Midianite traders sold him to the Egypt Potiphar and he soon became his personal servant, but then was falsely charged by his wife that he had attacked his wife, so he was sent to prison (Genesis 39:1-20).
After two years Joseph is called out of prison to interpret a dream that the Pharaoh has concerning seven years of plenty to be followed by seven years of famine. Not only does he interpret the dream, but also is set by the Pharaoh, at age 30, over all the land of Egypt (Genesis 41:1-54).
That brings us to our question,
"What did Joseph accuse his brothers of stealing?". Then the
famine does come to all the lands and Joseph opens the storehouses of
grain and sells it to those in need. Joseph's father sends his
brother's to Egypt to buy grain from Egypt, "When Joseph saw his
brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and
spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, "Where have you come
from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food." But
Joseph had recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize
him. Joseph remembered the dreams, which he had about them, and said
to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended
parts of our land." Then they said to him, "No, my lord, but your
servants have come to buy food. "We are all sons of one man; we are
honest men, your servants are not spies." Yet he said to them, "No,
but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!" But
they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one
man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our
father today, and one is no longer alive." Joseph said to them, "It
is as I said to you, you are spies; by this you will be tested: by
the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your
youngest brother comes here!"
(Genesis 42:7-15).
The brothers then remembered their missing brother, "Then truly they said to one another, "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us." (Genesis 42:21). So when they needed more grain they returned with their youngest brother (Genesis 43:1-15).
When they were ready to return Joseph once again had the money they paid for the grain put in their sacks, but in the youngest was put something else, and he sent his steward after them and asked to search their sacks (Genesis 44:1-5).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "So he said, "Now let it also be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and the rest of you shall be innocent." Then they hurried, each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. He searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. Then they tore their clothes, and when each man loaded his donkey, they returned to the city. When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, he was still there, and they fell to the ground before him. Joseph said to them, "What is this deed that you have done? Do you not know that such a man as I can indeed practice divination?" So Judah said, "What can we say to my lord? What can we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord's slaves, both we and the one in whose possession the cup has been found." But he said, "Far be it from me to do this. The man in whose possession the cup has been found, he shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father." (Genesis 44:10-17).
So there we have the answer to our question as the silver cup and the money for grain (verse 2) were found in Benjamin's sack as well as money in each of the brother's sacks searched from the oldest to the youngest, just as they were seated by arrangement of their brother whom they sold into slavery so many years ago (Genesis 43:33)!
Let us have the same attitude as Joseph who came to know his lot in life, "Now do not be grieved or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. Now, therefore, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, "God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay." (Genesis 45:5-9).
