Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
The Lord tells us in 1 Peter 4:11 "Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God;". So we are to speak as our Lord did speak upon this earth, and that only can be understood by studying the oracles of our Lord be able to:
1 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be
ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
Not only are we to confess with our lips Jesus as Lord, but also to share the good news to mankind. This confession is not in word only, for we must believe it from the heart which will "result in salvation" (Romans 10:8-10). "So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" (Romans 10:17).
Ephesians 5:14-21 For this reason it says, "Awake sleeper and arise from the dead, and Christ will
shine on you." Therefore Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of
your time, because the days are evil. So then do Not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord
is. And do not get drunk with wine for that is dissipation, but be Filled with the Spirit, speaking to one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with Your heart to the
Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
And be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
So we are to walk as wise men and that wisdom is revealed to mankind by the things we say to one another as "wisdom" says:
Proverbs 8:5-10 "O naive ones, understanding prudence; and, O fools, understand wisdom. Listen, for I
will speak noble things; and the opening of my lips will reveal right things. For my mouth will utter
truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness;
There is nothing crooked or perverted in them. They are all straightforward to him who understands,
and right to those who find knowledge. Take my instruction and not silver, and knowledge rather than
choicest gold.
Yet with all the good things the mouth can speak, it can speak perverse things-three of those things the Lord hates and are an abomination to Him: "a lying tongue, a false witness who utters lies and one who spreads strife among brothers." (Proverbs 6:16-19).
So for our answer to the question, "What can we not tame?", we turn to James chapter three where the Lord tells us if we are in the likeness of God we should not be blessing our Lord and cursing men with the same mouth. For a fountain will not send out both fresh and bitter water and neither does a fig tree produce both figs and olives, nor does salt water produce fresh (James 3:9-12).
It is indeed the small things that mean so much, just as a bit is put into the horses mouth, it allows the rider to guide this powerful animal. And a small rudder on a large ship allows the pilot of the ship to guide it where he wills. If man is able to bridle his tongue, this small part of the body, the body is controlled. The tongue can set a fire, like the small fire that can soon engulf the forest, if left unchecked.
James 3:6-8 The tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as
that which defiles the Entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For
every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles And creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by
the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless Evil and full of deadly poison.
So there we have the answer to our question, though many things of this earth can be tamed, the tongue is not one of them! Let us strive to "sound in speech" (Titus 2:8) so that we are careful to engage in "good deeds" and things that are "profitable for men" (Titus 3:8). And let us speak as the oracles of God:
Titus 2:11-15 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny
ungodliness and Worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking
for the blessed hope and the appearing Of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave
Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and To purify for Himself a people for His own
possession, zealous for good deeds. These things speak and exhort and reprove With all authority. Let no
one disregard you.
"And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory." (1 Peter 5:4) Let us prepare for that eternal day by bridling our tongue for life!
