Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

Who did not kill himself because of Paul?

Paul told Barnabas, "Let us return and visit the brethren in every city in which we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are." (Acts 15:36), but when Barnabas desired to take John Mark, who deserted them on their first journey, a sharp disagreement ensued between them to the point that they went separate ways. Barnabas and Mark sailed to Cypress while Paul chose Silas and traveled through Syria and Cilicia to strengthen the churches (Acts 15:36-41).

That brings us to our question, "Who did not kill himself because of Paul?". When Paul traveled past Troas, a vision appeared to him of a man of Macedonia saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." (Acts 16:9) , and immediately they sailed to Philippi. As they went down to a place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination cried out saying, "These men are bondservants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation." (Acts 16:17). She continued to follow them proclaiming the same thing for a great many days until Paul became annoyed at this and turned to her and said, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" (Acts 16:18). Now when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized both Paul and Silas and drug them before the authorities and said to them, "These men are throwing our city in confusion, being Jews, and are proclaiming customs which are not lawful for us to observe, being Romans." (Acts 16:20-21).

Then the crowd rose up against them and beat them with rods and they were thrown in prison, ordering the jailer to guard them securely, and he put them in the inner prison and put their feet in stocks (Acts 16:22-24). About midnight both Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God while the prisoners were listening to them, when suddenly an earthquake shook the very foundation of the jail and all the doors were immediately opened and the prisoner's chains were loosened (Acts 16:27-34). "When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!' And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and after he brought them out, he said, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?' They said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.' And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household.'" (Acts 16:27-34).

So there we have the answer to our question as it was the jailer who did not kill himself because of Paul. Not only that but he was also converted to the Lord at the acts and the teaching of the word of God , and was immediately baptized along with those who were able to understand the word of God within his household.

May we always be ready to set the good example before men, as we may never know when someone may be moved by our good works, and then to be able to teach them the good news for life!
