Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Who had a fearful dream?

While Manasseh was king of Judah, he rebuilt the high places and idols, which his father, Hezekiah had torn down. He made his own sons pass through fire and practiced witchcrafts and used divination, and used mediums and spiritualists, and he not only shed much innocent blood in Jerusalem, but he also seduced his people to do the same (2 Kings 21:3-16) so that the Lord promised, "Behold, I am bringing such a calamity on Jerusalem and Judah that whoever hears of it, both his ears shall tingle." (2 Kings 21:12). Amon, his son becomes king, but only serves two years in the likeness of his father, and is killed by his servants (2 Kings 21:19-23). Amon does have a great son named Josiah, the grandson of Manasseh, who then becomes king when he was eight years old. He began to seek the Lord in the eighth year of his reign, began purging the high places and idols in his twelfth year, and in his eighteenth year as king they find the long neglected Book of the Law in the Temple. When they read it to him, he tore his clothes and wept because they had not been following what the Lord had commanded. He then made a covenant to the Lord that he and his people would follow the Law and he removed all the abominations from the land and the kingdom served the Lord until his death (2 Chronicles 34:all).

Then King Neco of Egypt comes to do battle at the bidding of the Lord, but Josiah disguises himself and battles him anyway and is shot with an arrow and dies (2 Chronicles 35:21-27). Then his son, Joahaz, becomes king is his place for three months but he does evil in the sight of the Lord and he is replaced by the king of Egypt that makes his brother Eliakim (his name is changed to Jehoiakim) king in his place. Now he reigned eleven years and also did evil in the sight of the Lord and after serving the king of Babylon for thee years, he rebelled against him. Then the king of Babylon came up against him and sent Chaldeans, Arameans, Moabites and Ammonites against him so the word of the Lord could be fulfilled, "Surely at the command of the Lord it came upon Judah, to remove them from His sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done, and also for the innocent blood which he shed, for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the Lord would not forgive. (2 Kings 21:3-4). Judah is taken into captivity for seventy years into Babylon (2 Chronicles 36:13-21).

That brings us to our question, "Who had a fearful dream?". During the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, the king of Babylon besieged Jerusalem and the Lord gave that city into their hands. The king orders certain good looking and intelligent youths of Israel to be taught the language and literature of the Chaldeans, and this included a youth named Daniel (Daniel 1:1-6). In the second year of the reign of the reign of the king of Babylon, he has dreams that make his sleep escape him, so that he calls his magicians, the conjurers and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans to tell him his dream (Daniel 2:1-3). They try to buy some time by asking the king to tell the dream to him so that they can come up with some answer that would sound good and put off destruction by the king (Daniel 2:4-9), but the king commanded and stands firm in it, "The command from me if firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be torn limb from limb, and your houses will be made a rubbish heap. (Daniel 2:5). The Chaldeans tell the king, "There is not a man on earth who could declare the matter for the king, inasmuch as no great king or ruler has ever asked anything like this of any magician. Conjurer or Chaldean. Moreover, the thing which the king commands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it to the king except gods, whose dwelling place is not with mortal flesh." (Daniel 2:10-11) Then the king declared that they should be killed, and so they searched for Daniel and his friends to kill them (Daniel 2:13). When they found Daniel, he told the king, "As for the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither wise men, conjurers, magicians, nor diviners are able to declare it to the king" …"But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me for any wisdom residing in me more than any living man, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king that you may understand the thoughts of your mind". (Daniel 2:27 & 30) Daniel then declares both the dream and its meaning and when he finished, the king paid homage before Daniel and promoted him as ruler over the province and over the wise men of Babylon (Daniel 2:46-48).

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and flourishing in my palace. I saw a dream and it made me fearful; and these fantasies as I lay on my bed and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. So I gave orders to bring into my presence all the wise men of Babylon, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. Then the magicians, the conjurers, the Chaldeans, and the diviners came in, and I related the dream to them; but they could not make the interpretation known to me. But finally Daniel came in before me, whose name is Belteshazzar according to the name of my god, and in whom is a spirit of the holy gods; and I related the dream to him, saying, 'O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, since I know that a spirit of the holy gods is in you and no mystery baffles you, tell me the visions of my dream which I have seen, along with its interpretation.'" (Daniel 4:4-9) So there we have the answer to our question, as the king who had a fearful dream was none other than king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon!

Let us give glory to God and not be as this king who puffed himself up, as in his dream. This great tree which was cut down, and after loosing his mind, ends up in a field eating grass like cattle. When that period of time ended, and his reasoning returned, he does repent and blesses the Most High (Daniel 4:20-32)!
