Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

How much did the widow give?

Jesus told us, "For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Luke 18:25), and also,

Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, And

where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor

Rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart

will also be."

Tithing was the rule under the Old Testament Law, but now, under the New Testament, we are to give as we have prospered by purposing in our heart our contribution and also by gathering together on the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 16:1-2). We must also be a cheerful giver and not one who feels like he is being pushed into giving but also one who recognizes that the one who "sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly." (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). As we supply seed to the sower, we will be enriched in everything concerning the spiritual blessings as we will be pleasing to God (2 Corinthians 9:10-15).

Those of the church at Philippi are thanked by Paul because of their monetary support to him more than once while other churches did not support him in his need. Paul did not seek for the gift itself, but the profit to the brethren at Philippi that is increased by the giving of the gift (Philippians 4:14-17). The church at Laodicea thought they were rich and wealthy but they are really poor and wretched and miserable and as their works are lukewarm God is ready to spit them out of His mouth (Revelation 3:14-17). While the church at Smyrna is in poverty and yet God says they are rich (Revelation 2:8-11).

And so for our answer to our question of how much did the widow give. To Luke chapter 21 we go for our answer,

Luke 21:1-4 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts in the treasury. And He saw a poor

widow putting in two small copper coins. And He said, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more

than all of them; for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she our of her poverty put in

all that she had to live on."

Jesus says this widow put in more than the rest, not in dollars and cents, but because she gave all that she had to live on. Talk about trusting in the Lord to provide! What faith she has shown by her action which still speaks to us this day! Yes, for our answer, she gave all that she had!

What about us? Are we giving with a cheerful heart and with all liberality, not to be seen of men, but to be pleasing to God. Let us not be found "robbing God" as those did during the days of Malachi
(Malachi 3:8-10).
