Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Elijah was God's prophet while Ahab was king along with his wicked queen, Jezebel. Jezebel wanted all the prophets of God destroyed, but a God fearing man named Obediah saved one hundred of them by hiding them. Then Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah by seeing which deity would consume the offering prepared for each. So the prophets of the idol gods tried from morning until noon to no avail. Elijah then mocked them, saying, "Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps asleep and needs to be awakened. So they cried with a loud voice and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out on them. And it came about when midday was past, that they raved until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice; but their was no voice, no one answered, and no one paid attention." (1 Kings 18:27-29). Then Elijah had them pour water on the offering he had prepared and prayed, "Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that thou, O Lord, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.' Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, 'The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God.' Then Elijah said to them, 'Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.' So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook of Kishon, and slew them there." (1 Kings 18:37-40). Needless to say, this did not make Jezebel very happy and she sent men to pursue and kill Elijah, who fled before them. An angel of the Lord came before him and prophesied that he would appoint a king of Aram, of Israel and anoint his replacement as the prophet of God, the son of Shaphat.
That brings us to our question, "What prophet purified some water and stew?". So it came about that Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:1) by God into heaven and the son of Shaphat said, "'My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!' and he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces." (2 Kings 2:12). He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters of the river Jordan and the waters divided and he crossed over (2 Kings 2:14). Then the sons of the prophets in Jericho saw him and said that he had the spirit of Elijah with him they wanted him to send fifty men to search for Elijha, since God could have put him up on some mountain nearby, but he said, "You shall not send." (2 Kings 2:15-16). They searched three days after wearing down the son of Shaphat about searching for Elijah, but they found nothing.
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "Then the men of the city said to Elisha, 'Behold now, the situation of the city is pleasant, as my Lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land is unfruitful.' And he said, 'Bring me a jar, and put salt in it.' So they brought it to him. And he went out to the spring of water, and threw salt in it and said, 'Thus says the Lord, 'I have purified these waters; ther4e shall not be from there death or unfruitfulness any longer'" So the waters have been purified to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke." (2 Kings 2:19-22), "When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. As the sons of the prophets were sitting before him, he said to his servant, 'Put on the large pot and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.' Then one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, for they did not know what they were. So they poured it out for the men to eat. And it came about as they were eating of the stew, that they cried out and said, 'O man of God, there is death in the pot.' And they were unable to eat. But he said, 'Now bring meal.' And he threw it in the pot, and he said, 'Pout it out for the people that they may eat.' Then there was no harm in the pot." (2Kings 4:38-41). So there we have the answer to our question, as the one who purified some water and stew was none other than Elisha, the son of Shaphat!
The Lord calls these great prophets, and the men of faith who stood fast with Him, (men of whom the world was not worthy) (Hebrews 11:38). Let us be mindful of these great men who worked great miracles by God so that we may read and understand that God is with us as we walk with Him for life!
