Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
The Old Testament or covenant (will) was given to man by God through the agency of angels (Hebrews 2:2), started with Moses on Mount Sinai after being led out of Egypt by miracles performed before the Egyptian people (Exodus 11,12,13 &14). The high priest was able to enter within the veil of the inner tabernacle of the temple to perform his duties, and he also offered sacrifices for the sins of the people each year, "Now when these things were prepared, the priests are continually entering the outer tabernacle, performing the divine worship, but into the second only the high priest enters, once a year, not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the sins of the people committed in ignorance. The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed, while the outer tabernacle is still standing, which is a symbol for the present time. Accordingly both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make the worshiper perfect in conscience, since they relate only to food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until a time of reformation." (Hebrews 9:6-10)
This brings us to our question, "Who is the first priest mentioned in the bible?". Aaron, the older brother of Moses and both of the tribe of Levi was anointed by Moses as priest over the people of Israel along with his sons Nadab and Abihu (Exodus 28:41). Even as priest, Aaron was not without sin as he gave in to the wishes of the people who wanted an image of God made so they could see God and they made the golden calf and allowed the people to get out of control and then lied to Moses that the calf jumped out of the fire when they threw the gold into it (Exodus 32:1-5, & 21-25). Aaron's sons were not spared when they offered strange fire to their firepans and were consumed by fire from the Lord (Leviticus 10:1-2).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he led out his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. He brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative Lot with his possessions, and also the women, and the people. Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. He blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." He gave him a tenth of all." (Genesis 14:14-20).
So there we have the answer to our question, as it is none other than Melchizedek to whom Abram paid a tenth of all and was without father and mother, neither beginning of days nor end of life, like the Son of God (Hebrews 7:1-3)!
Interestingly enough a priest is not needed today as we have our High Priest, Jesus Christ who made that eternal sacrifice so that a priest is not needed to enter the veil to offer a sacrifice each year for the peoples sins-which did not remove the sins from their conscious, but sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh (Hebrews 9:13) while Christ's sacrifice is for all time (Hebrews 9:23-28 & 10:1-18) so that we can enter that eternal home "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Mehchizedek." (Hebrews 6:19-20)!
