Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
John tells us how we as Christians
should walk, "My little children I am writing these things to you
so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with
the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the
propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those
of the whole world. By this we know that we have come to know Him, if
we keep His commandments. The one who says, "I have come to know
Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is
not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in Him the love of God has
truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him; the one who
says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He
walked."
(1 John 2:1-6).
Paul encourages us to be imitators of
him, who imitates Him, "Be imitators of me, just as I also am of
Christ." (1 Corinthians 11:1). He also asks
us to test ourselves to the word of God, "Test yourselves to see
if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize
this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you&endash;unless
indeed you fail the test?" (2 Corinthians 13:5-6) Paul
also tells us how we should interact with one another&endash;in Him,
"Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is
any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if
any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the
same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one
purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with
humility of mind regard one another as more important than
yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests,
but also for the interests of others."
(Philippians 2:1-4) One would think there should be no
problem between Christians!
That brings us to our question, "What is the source of quarrels and conflicts?". Once again Paul reminds us of who we ought to be as we walk upon this physical earth, "Let love of the brethren continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill&endash;treated since you yourselves also are in the body. Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU," so that we can confidently say, "THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?" Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith." (Hebrews 13:1-7) But people will be people, and do not always put the Lord first in their lives as James reminds us, "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was." (James 1:22-24)
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures. You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:1-4)
So there we have the answer to our question, as the source of quarrels and conflicts are our own desire for pleasures of this world, and so we lust after them and are envious of others and desire to obtain them in any way we can!
May we hold our desires for these worldly things in check as once again, John chimes in with the same thought, "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in Him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue." (1 John 3:15-18).
Let us show our love to God by our activity for life, "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome." (1 John 5:2-3)
