Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Isaac and Rebekah have twin sons who were to fulfill prophecy, "And the Lord said to her, 'Two nations are in your womb; and two peoples shall be separated from your body; and one people shall be stronger than the other; and the older shall serve the younger.'" (Genesis 25:23). The first son was called Esau because he was red all over like a hairy garment, while the second was called Jacob because he was holding onto his brothers heal. Esau was a hunter and was loved by Isaac while Jacob was a peaceful man and lived in tents and was loved by his mother, Rebekah.
As they grew, Esau came in from the field one day and Jacob had been cooking stew, and Esau begged for some as he was famished, "But Jacob said, "'First sell me your birthright.' And Esau said, 'Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?' And Jacob said, 'First swear to me.'; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright." (Genesis 25:31-34). When Isaac became elderly, he wanted to give the blessing to Esau, but Rebekah overheard him and tricked him into thinking Jacob was Esau since his eyesight was not very good. She covered Jacob's arms with the skin of a goat and with bread and a stew of game, he gave it to Isaac who ate and smelled the arms of Jacob, and when he was convinced it was Esau, he blessed him. When Esau came in, Isaac told him, "Behold, I have made him your master, and all his relatives I have given to him as servants; and with grain and new wine I have sustained him. Now for you then, what can I do, my son?" (Genesis 27:37). Now Esau was bitter and planned on killing Jacob, and Rebekah overheard the plot and she sent Jacob to Haran, the land of her brother, Laban.
That brings us to our question, "Jacob wept with love and joy over whom?". As Jacob was about to leave, Isaac asked him not to take a wife from the daughters of Canaan but to take one from the daughters of Laban. So he journeyed to the lands of the east and stopped at a well in a field where some sheep were gathered and he inquired of the men that were there if they knew of Laban and they said they did and that one of his daughters was now coming with a herd of sheep.
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "And it came about, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went up, and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept. And Jacob told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and that he was Rebekah's son, and she ran and told her father." (Genesis 29:10-12). So there we have the answer to our question, as the one whom Jacob wept with love and joy was a beautiful woman named, Rachel!
Rachel is describes as beautiful of form and face and she has an older sister named Leah who is described as having "weak eyes", or not as attractive as Rachel. Jacob makes a pact with Laban for the hand of his younger daughter< Rachel for seven years work. After the seven years-which seem as only a few days-and the wedding night, Jacob finds out the next morning that he actually has Leah as his wife instead! Laban explains that it is their custom to marry the older before the younger-so, undeterred, he works another seven years for Rachel (Genesis 29:13-30).
Jacob pleased his parents by going to Laban and marrying one of his daughters-well, make that two! And they are blessed along with two of their maids with twelve sons (Genesis 35:22-29) that represent the twelve tribes of Israel and Jacob's name is changed by God, "And God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob; you shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.'" (Genesis 35:10). Jacob also continued the promise given to Abraham, "And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, 'I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give to you and your descendants. Your descendants shall also be like the dust out of the earth, and you shall spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.'" (Genesis 28:13-14).
And indeed we have been blesses as from the tribe of Judah came the Messiah to save the world from itself by obedience to Him and His word for life, "Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to His seed. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as referring to many, but rather to one, 'And to your seed,' that is, Christ." (Galatians 3:16).
"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house upon the rock." (Matthew 7:24).
