Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

How were the five thousand fed?

Jesus came speaking as one having authority but that did not keep the Jews from asking who He really is (John 10:24).

As the late Carl Sagan once remarked something to the effect of "Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence." For a man to claim that he is the Son of God, the Messiah, the Christ, is nothing to sneeze at and there were others that had made claims that they were someone great as Gamaliel reminded the council in Acts 5:34-41 as the Judas and Judas of Galilee both claimed to be somebody and when they were killed their followers disbanded.

And now this man named Jesus claims to be someone great, even the Son of God and not only with speaking of words with authority, but with signs that amaze the people of that time and would amaze men even today! The common Jews recognized Jesus through the words that He spoke, but especially the signs that He performed before the people (John 7:31). On the other hand the Jewish rulers also saw the signs but not opening their eyes to the truth (John 7:25-26), they demanded a "sign from heaven"
(Luke 11:14-16)!

To John chapter six we go to find our answer to today's question of how the five thousand were fed. Jesus once again followed by a multitude of people and He shows compassion on them by healing the sick until it is late in the day. His disciples ask Jesus to send them to nearby villages so they can get something to eat. But Jesus tells them, "Where are we to buy bread that these may eat." (John 6:5). This was asked so that the wheels of their mind, so to speak, might start rolling and realize the enormity of the task at hand of five thousand men, which does not count the women and children John 6:5-6)! Phillip recognizes their treasury is shy of the task as he says, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little." (John 6:7). One can break a loaf of barley into may crumbs, but that does not satisfy ones hunger. Even Andrew tries to help as he spies a lad with five barley loaves and two fish, but then says, "…but what are these with so many people?" (John 6:9). Then Jesus asks the disciples to have the people to sit on the grass in groups and begins to break in pieces the loaves and distribute them through His disciples. When the group has eaten so they are satisfied, Jesus has them gather up the fragments and they gather up twelve baskets full!

John 6:14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, "This is truly the

Prophet who is to come into the world."

And so there we have our answer to today's question of how the five thousand were fed. It was another one of those amazing miracles of our Lord as He took the five barley loaves and two fish and fed them all and then gathered twelve baskets of fragments! Let us think about these miracles that were not only performed by Jesus but then to have them preserved in this great book, the bible, that we may read today and instill within us not only the belief that He is the Son of God, but also an active faith for eternal life!
