Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
The Lord spoke to Job after Job had justified
himself in his own eyes (Job 32:1), "Where were you when I
had laid the foundation of the earth! Tell Me, if you have
understanding, who set its measurements, since you know? Or who
stretched the line on it? On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid
its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the
sons of God shouted for joy?" (Job 38:4-7). All good
questions. So, God who created the universe, builds things upon
foundations and a chief corner stone even for the earth! Even
families that are strong are built upon foundations of honor,
respect, wisdom, truth, humility and love, "The fear of the Lord
is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and do not forsake your
mother's teaching; indeed they are a graceful wreath to your head,
and ornaments about your neck." (Proverbs 1:7-9 & also
31:10-31). And of course, the prophecy of the New Covenant that
God will make with both Jew and Gentile by His word, even though the
Jews rejected Jesus and made a covenant with Judas to put to death
the One who scourged them, but that did not stop the prophecy from
fulfilling, and indeed their very wicked deeds helped fulfill them,
"To whom would He teach knowledge? And to whom would He interpret
the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just taken from the
breast? For He says, 'Order, on order, order on order, line on line,
line on line, a little here, a little there. Indeed, He will speak to
this people through stammering lips and a foreign tongue, He who said
to them, 'Here is rest, give rest to the weary,' and, 'Here is
repose,' but they would not listen. So the word of the Lord to them
will be, 'Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line,
a little here, a little there,' that they may go and stumble
backward, be broken, snared, and taken captive. Therefore, hear the
word of the Lord, o scoffers, who rule this people who are in
Jerusalem, because you have said, 'We have a made a covenant with
death, and with Sheol we have made a pact. The overwhelming scourge
will not reach us when it passes by, for we have made falsehood our
refuge and we have concealed ourselves with deception.' Therefore
thus says the Lord God, 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a Stone, a
tested Stone, a costly Cornerstone for the foundation, firmly places.
He who believes in it will not be disturbed, And it will make justice
the measuring line, and righteousness the level; and hail shall sweep
away the refuge of lies, and waters shall overflow the secret
place.'"
(Isaiah 28:9-17).
That brings us to our question, "Who is the Chief Cornerstone"?. When the Lord told the chief priests, elders and scribes of the vineyard owner who sent his own son to collect the harvest produce, and they killed him thinking they could collect the inheritance, and then Jesus asked them what the vine owner would do and they said, "'He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers, who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons.' Jesus said to them, 'Did you never read in the scriptures, 'The Stone which the builders rejected, this became the Chief Corner Stone; This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes.'? Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and be given to a nation producing the fruit of it. And he who falls on this Stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.'"(Matthew 21:41-44)
After the crucifixion of Jesus, the apostles Peter and John were walking into the temple through the gate called Beautiful where a man, lame from birth was begging for alms and the apostles looked at him and said, "I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you; In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!" (Acts 3:6). Immediately Peter raised him up and the man began leaping and praising God and the people in the temple recognized the man and were amazed at the miracle that had taken place, but Peter tells them that the one they disowned, Jesus, was the power by which this man gained his strength, and now they could redeem themselves by repenting and turning to Him (Acts 3:7-26).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read as the council questions Peter and John the next day, "By what power, or in what name, have you done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, 'Rulers and elders of the people, if we are on trial today for the benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, let it be known to all of you, and to the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by this name this man stands before you in good health. He is the Stone which was rejected by you, the builders but which became the very Corner Stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.'" (Acts 4:7-12).
So there is the answer to our question as Jesus Christ is the Stone which the builders rejected! May we be honest enough to recognize the Stone and His authority and so not be crushed to dust by Him for life!
