Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.

This week's question:

Which disciple walked on the water?

Jesus chose twelve men to follow Him. One-namely Judas, Jesus identified as a betrayer (John 13:21-26). Although they were untrained and uneducated men, it did confound the educated as even these "Galileans" performed miracles before their very eyes (Acts 3:1-10 & Acts 4:13-16).

One was even a tax-gatherer and the Pharisees were unhappy with the company that Jesus kept, namely the tax gatherers and sinners (Matthew 16:1-4). Although Jesus performed many miracles and cast out demons, the Pharisees still tested Him by requesting a sign from heaven (Matthew 9:9-13).

The disciples proved their worth while Jesus walked this earth and much more after Christ's resurrection as they were filled with the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter two. When the council questioned them about their teaching "Jesus" after being strictly ordered not too by the council, they showed great courage as they told the council, "We must obey God rather than men." (Acts 5:29-62), and then continued to teach that Jesus is the Christ.

So for our answer to today's question of which disciple walked on the water. To Matthew chapter fourteen we go to see Jesus performing yet another miracle of feeding the five-thousand men plus women and children with five loaves and two fish. Immediately after that Jesus sends His disciples in a boat ahead of Him as He goes up to the mountain to pray. Late in the night Jesus walks across the water, which scares the disciples as they think it is a ghost. When Jesus reassures them that it is He, Peter says:

Matthew 14:28-33 "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to you on the water." And He said, "Come!"

And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he

became frightened , and beginning to sink, he cried out , "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus stretched

out his hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why do you doubt?" When He got

into the boat, the wind stopped. And those who were in the boat worshipped Him, saying, "You are

certainly God's Son!"

And so there we have the answer to today's question. The disciple is none other that Peter! The same one who gave the "good confession" (Matthew 16:13-19), the same one who felt it was not Jesus place to serve them but for them to serve Him, (John 13:6-10) and also the one who was not going to let Jesus die upon this earth, (Matthew 16:21-23).

Jesus tells Peter that Satan requested to have him sifted like wheat, but Jesus prays that his faith would not fail him and he would return and strengthen his brothers (Luke 22:31-32). When Jesus is crucified, Peter later determines to return to his previous trade as a fisherman (John 21:1-14). But later Peter proves his strength as he preaches the first gospel sermon in Acts chapter two!

May our courage not fail us during a time of temptation so we may look to the courage of men like Peter and stand firm against the sifting of the evil one, firm until the end!
