Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

What did the people want to do with Jesus?

Almost two thousand years ago there came a man whose mother was told by angels that He was to be called "Son of the Most High" and will be given the "throne of His father David" and that His "kingdom would have no end" (Luke 1:31-35). When the magi came to Jerusalem looking for the "king of the Jews", not only was King Herod troubled, but all of Jerusalem with him (Matthew 2:1-3). When Jesus was baptized, God declares His own Son by saying before all the people, "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased." (Matthew 3:17)

Soon, Jesus was teaching as one with authority, (Matthew 7:29) and performing many miracles that astonished the people of Israel (Matthew 9:1-8). Many of the Jewish leaders had trouble of accepting Jesus as the Messiah as He did not have a "stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him." (Isaiah 53:2) In comparison, Saul, who stood from his shoulders up above the people, was chosen by God to be king of the Jews to help bring the people of Israel together. God does recognize what man looks to in an individual, and yet Jesus does not seem to bear the physical appearance that men would be drawn to Him. Only His words and signs were to help the people accept His for who He truly is, the Son of Man, the Christ, the Messiah. It reminds one of the base things that God has chosen to nullify the things that are:

1 Corinthians 1:20-29 Where is the wise man? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made

foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not

come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those

who believe. For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified,

to Jews a stumbling block and to gentiles foolishness, but to those that are called, both Jews and Greeks,

Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men and

the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many

wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of

the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which

are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so

that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God.

To John chapter six we go to find our answer to today's question of what the people wanted to do with Jesus. Jesus is being followed by a multitude of people who had seen signs performed by Him. Jesus, already knowing what He was About to do, tests Philip by asking him, "Where are we to buy bread that these may eat?" Philip seems to be a little perplexed about this also as he says, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little." (John 6:5-7) Andrew, wanting to help out points out a young lad with five barley loaves and two fish and then comments, "what use are these with so many?" And rightfully so with about five thousand men besides the women and children! So Jesus has them divide them up to the people and when they gather up what is left over they have about twelve baskets of fragments and when the people saw the sign that was performed they said,

John 6:14-15"This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world." So Jesus, perceiving that they

were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him King, withdrew again to the mountain by

Himself alone.

And so there we have our answer to today's question. The people wanted to make Him a king on this earth. When Jesus tells the people He must be "Lifted up from this earth", or die, the people ask, "Who is the son of Man" or to the point, "who are you?" since they thought the Messiah was to remain on the earth forever as king, not recognizing the spiritual aspect of His being King. "But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him." (John 12:27-40).

Before the week was out these very people who perceived Him as the "Prophet who was to come into the world", helped crucify the Son of God (John 18:33-40. Then Pilate, who said he found no guilt in the man Jesus, puts a telling sign over the crucified Jesus: "JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS" (John 19:19).

Let us recognize the true king by the words that He did speak and are preserved for us to study to find the truth, as Jesus tells Pilate, "Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" (John 18:37-38). "Thy word is truth!" (John17:17)
