Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Who could hear but not understand?

When Jesus healed a man who was possessed, blind, and could not speak, so that the man was of his right mind and could both see and speak, the people were amazed, but the Pharisees charged that He performed these miracles by Beelzebul. "You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. The good man brings out of his good treasure what is good; and the evil man brings out of his evil treasure what is evil. But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You." But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here." (Matthew 12:34-42)

Jesus told the people that had gathered to see both His works and listen. When others reported to Him, they asked to speak to Him. "But He answered and said to them, 'My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it." (Luke 8:21). So were his brothers doing it?

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "After three days Paul called together those who were the leading men of the Jews, and when they came together, he began saying to them, 'Brethren, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.' and, "And some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe. And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, 'The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, saying, 'Go to this people and say, 'You will keep on hearing but will not understand; and will keep on seeing, but will not perceive. For the heart of this people has become dull, and with their ears they scarcely hear, and they have closed their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes, and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and return, and I should heal them.'" (Acts 28:17 & 24-27).

So there we have the answer to our question, as it is the Jews who will not hear the word of God with understanding so as to believe!

May we be honest enough to let the eyes of our heart (Ephesians 1:18) see the truth so as to believe and do it!
