Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

What does Jesus learn on the cross?

As each new generation of people cycle upon this earth the learning process from infant to responsible adult replay as parents who have not had any experience raising their own offspring learn by doing. As we have observed with recent history, knowledge seems to gain as new generations pass, but more ancient history seems to have some secrets that man still strives to explore. But God has kept His hand upon the one book, the Bible, so that we still can find the way that leads to life by studying His eternal word.

That circles us back to our question, "What does Jesus learn upon the cross?". One would think that although man has to go through the learning process from parents to teachers, to professors, to the life of sometimes "hard knocks", or living and leaning by testing and querying, but that the Son of God, the Christ, while living upon this earth, would not have anything to learn. Jesus even mentions about His life, that it is His to give up or to take it up again (John 10:18). As Jesus walked this earth, He confirmed Himself as the Christ by miracles such as healing the sick, the blind, and those with demonic possession and the paralytic (Mark 2:1-12) and would often was accused of "working" on the Sabbath when these things were done on that day and Jesus responded to His accusers, "My Father is working until now, and I myself am working." (John 5:17). When Jesus compared Himself to the Father the Jews would pick up stones to kill Him only to have Him melt into the crowd (John 8:49-59). While Jesus prayed to the Father before going to the Garden of Gethsemane as His hour had come,

John 17:1-4 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said,

"Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even as You

gave His authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give

eternal life. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus

Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work

which you have given Me to do.

So the prophecy speaking of the things the Christ was to do upon this earth before the cross was completed and His hour was now at hand, and as He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." (Matthew 26:39). This brings us to our answer as we now turn to,

Hebrews 5:8-9 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience through the things which

He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the

source of eternal salvation,

So we can see that although Jesus did not want to endure that death on the cross, He learned obedience by doing the task which was requested of Him by the Father, and by so doing Jesus became the source of eternal salvation to all those who also obey His word. So there we have the answer to our question. Jesus learned obedience to the Father.

Jesus did not look for His own personal interest but for the interest of all mankind by His obedience to the Father,

Philippians 2:8-13 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by

becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also,

God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so

that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are on the earth and under

the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of

God the Father. So then my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my

presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and

trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good

pleasure.

Just as Jesus learned obedience, so must we too learn obedience with humility to His word as we work out our salvation by doing His will for life eternal!
