Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Jesus told the apostles, "It is not for you to know the times or the epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." (Acts 1:7-8), and indeed the power did come upon them as the kingdom was established as the Lord promised it would be (Acts 2:all) before some of that generation of people living in Israel passed on from the earth (Mark 9:1).
That brings us to our question, "Where were Jesus' followers first called 'Christian'?". There is no doubt that names have followed the men and women who followed Jesus from "disciples" (Acts 9:25), to "the sect of the Nazarenes" (Acts 24:5) , and "saints" (Romans 8:27) , to "the Way" (Acts 9:2). But the name "Christian" has stood the test of time about the Lord Jesus Christ as even Gamaliel said about time and the followers of those who were impostors and how they now deal with the apostles who have just miraculously healed the man at the gate of the temple called Beautiful in which those gathered in the temple saw him healed and praising God (Acts 3:1-12) and then an angel helped the apostles escape from prison (Acts 5:19).
Gamaliel then told the council which was bent on killing them, "Men of Israel, take care what you propose to do with these men. For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men joined up with him, and he was slain; and all who followed him were dispersed and came up to nothing. After this man Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away some people after him, he too perished , and all who followed him were scattered. And so in this present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action should be of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God." (Acts 5:35-39). So, the council took his advise and did not kill them, but flogged them instead and after commanding that they no longer teach in the name of Jesus.
And what was the reaction of the apostles to their command? "So they went on their way from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ." (Acts 5:41-42). Those who call themselves after Jesus Christ have heard the word of God (Acts 2:14-36) believed in it (Acts 2:37) confessed Him before men (Acts 8:37) repented of their sins (Acts 2:38 & Acts 22:16) and then were immediately baptized (Acts 16:14-15 & 33; Romans 6:1-6; 1 Peter 3:21).
And so, as they put off the old man of sin, and put on the new man of Christ (Romans 6:6-13 & Colossians 3:1-17), and they also put on a new name of Him who suffered upon the cross by learning obedience from the things which He suffered (Hebrews 5:8-9 & 12:2 & Philippians 2:5-12) and these men and women were and still are called "Christian" (Acts 28:16 & 1 Peter 4:16).
And so to answer our question we turn and read, "And he left for Tarsus to look for Saul; and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it came about that for an entire year they met with the church, and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch." (Acts 11:25-26). And that is the answer to our question as the place where they were first called "Christian" was in Antioch!
May we realize the importance of learning obedience to Him who opened the way to salvation by the cross and the promise which He has made to all those who obey Him, "eternal life." (1 John 2:24-25). Abide in Him by abiding in His word and living it in obedience for life by being baptized in that watery grave for the washing away of your sins!
