Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Who wants a sign from heaven?

"If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, 'Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams; for the Lord your God is testing you to find out if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul." (Deuteronomy 13:1-3). Sometimes God uses evil men to carry out his plan or communicate to Israel as a test. If that prophecy, which was made, comes to pass and then the one who prophesied encourages them to follow after other gods, they should not only not follow him, but put him to death (Deuteronomy 13:5)!

The prophet Isaiah says concerning the Messiah, "Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with Child and bear a Son, and she will call His name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14). And then another little tidbit from Isaiah, "Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him." (Isaiah 53:1-2). And then again we read, "And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, 'Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed-and a sword will pierce even your own soul to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed." (Luke 2:34-35), and of course when the angel told the shepherds, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger." (Luke 2:10-12), and after they related what they saw and heard, "And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart."
(Luke 2:18-19).

That brings us to our question, "Who wants a sign from heaven?". So then Jesus began His ministry, teaching as one having authority and further convincing the multitudes with convincing proofs, by the miraculous signs He performed by His own hand before the very eyes of the people (Matthew 9:35 & Mark 1:32-34). When He cast out the demons, he was charged by some of the Jewish leaders that He did this work by the power of Beelzebub, "Then there was brought to Him a demon-possessed man who was blind and dumb, and He healed him, so that the dumb man spoke and saw. And all the multitudes were amazed, and began to say, ' This Man cannot be the Son of David, can He?' But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, 'This man casts out demons only by Beelzebub the ruler of the demons.'" (Matthew 12:22-24).

Interestingly enough, even a blind man, who was healed by Jesus, understood the sign which He performed, while the unbelieving Pharisees questioned him concerning his being healed of his blindness, he told them, "'Well, here is an amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes. We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing, and does His will, He hears him. Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.' They answered and said to him, 'You were born entirely in sins, and you are teaching us?' And they put him out." (John 9:30-34).

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him. And sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, 'Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you , no sign shall be given to this generation.'" (Mark 8:11-12). And so there we have the answer to our question, as it was the Pharisees, or the leaders of the Jews that demanded a sign from heaven, testing Him. Jesus also tells them, ..."This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah." (Luke 11:29).

May we be as convicted as the blind man who received his sight and stood by his story even though he was put out of the synagogue, as some were afraid to loose their position by confessing Jesus as Lord (John 11:46-51 & 12:42)!
