Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:
Once someone has been added to the church (Acts 2:47) by believing (Acts 17:34), repenting of their sins (Acts 2:38), confessing Him before others (Romans 10:10), and being baptized (1 peter 3:21) in that burial of a watery grave (Romans 6:3-6) to have our sins washed away (Acts 22:16) in the like manner of Jesus' death burial and resurrection. We are raised up in Christ (Colossians 3:1) putting on the new self (Colossians 3:10) setting our mind on the things above so that we may be revealed with Him in glory at the end of time (Colossians 3:2-4). Once we are raised up out of that watery grave, our journey has just begun "so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;" (Colossians 1:10). The question that then arises quite often is this, "What sin will lead's to death?", and along with that another question that follows, "Can a child of God fall into sin that will lead to spiritual death?".
To begin our search to these questions we first turn to,
James 5:19-20 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him
know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a
multitude of sins.
As we can see from this passage a "brother" can stray from the truth, which puts him in error, and if another turns the sinner back to the truth, he will cover a multitude of sins that would have been committed had the erring brother continue in sin, saving his soul from that spiritual death. Another passage that helps us understand that one can fall from the righteous pathway, "For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it." (Hebrews 2:1). Again, one can drift from the good word of truth. "Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it." (Hebrews 4:1). So again we see one may come short of His rest. Another sobering passage, "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all." (James 2:10). Again we can stumble at one point and be guilty of the whole law and again be found short as verse thirteen say, "For judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.". To the lukewarm members of the church of Laodicea he tells them, "So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of may mouth." (Revelation 3:16). That should get our attention! So sin can vary from one to another, and weakness in one area may be a strong point for another, but sin is still a sin and must be overcome as God provides a way of escape, if we want to look for it (1 Corinthians 10:13). Jesus Christ is our advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1-2) and again, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). Since we can confess our sins and have them forgiven, what sin would lead to spiritual death?
Again we turn to another passage that will bring us closer to our answer,
Hebrews 6:4-6 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly
gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the
powers of the age to come, and then to have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to
repentance since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
As we can see, this is an enlightened child of God who has tasted of the good word and then has given into the ways of the world, and has fallen into sin and away from the path of life. Why is it impossible to renew this once faithful Christian? We now turn to find our answer to our question,
Hebrews 10:23-26 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is
faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own
assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see
the day drawing near. For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there
no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of the judgment and the fury of a fire
which will consume the adversaries.
So there we have our answer to our question. The sin that leads to death is the "willful" sin, or the sin that one does not want to abandon and as long as one does not want to repent of it, it is impossible to renew them (2 Peter 2:20-22) and will lead to spiritual death. "For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner?" (1 Peter 4:17-18) Let us persevere for life!
