Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word
This week's question:

Why was Jesus tempted by Satan?

At the "age of about thirty" (Luke 3:23) with the baptism of Jesus, "the mystery which was hidden for past ages" (Colossians 1:26), begins to be revealed as the great voice of the Father says: "This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased."

Since all men have sinned and fall short of the gory of God (Romans 3:23) the plan of God continues to unfold.

Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman,

born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the

adoption as sons.

Because we all were once dead in our trespasses and sins as we walked to the course of the world (Ephesians 2:1-3), the Lamb of God had to die without blemish (Hebrews 9:14). He was to be tempted in all things and yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15).

Hebrews 5:8-10 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And

having been made perfect, He became to all them that obey Him the source of eternal salvation, being

designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

To Matthew chapter four we go to find Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit in the wilderness while fasting for forty days and as He hungered, was then tempted by Satan to turn stone to bread to satisfy that hunger. Israel, while undergoing their test in the wilderness did not put their trust in God but wanted to satisfy their problem by going back to Egypt even though God told them He would provide. Jesus who was for a little while lower than the angels (Hebrews 2:7):

Philippians 2:5-7 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Jesus Christ, who, although He

existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but Emptied Himself,

taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Jesus used the scriptures to defend His position as any man should arm ourselves today. Let us live by the word of God and not by "bread alone". We need the physical food for this life, but our spiritual food is from the word of God and our sight on this earth should be a better country, a city prepared by God (Hebrews 11:16).

The next temptation is a testing of God. Satan taunts Jesus again to prove His divinity as the "Son" when He is asked to throw Himself off the pinnacle of the temple "if You are the Son of God" as angels are to minister to Him. God's true test of His divinity is to be revealed fully in the cross. As this so called 'test' of Satan is not in God's plan, it would be "put the Lord God to the test" (verse 7).

Finally, as Satan tempts Jesus to forgo the death on the cross as the tempter shows an easier way to be King rather than the way of the cross which would be full of pain and anguish, but to be king of this physical world as the Jews desired to give Him anyway (John 6:14-16). Peter sets this temptation before Him also when Jesus says He must be killed and then raised up on the third day:

Matthew 16:21-23 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and

suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the

third day. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never

happen to You." But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me Satan! You are a stumbling block to

Me; for your interest are not setting your mind on God's, but man's."

As we saw in Hebrews 5:8-9 Jesus learned obedience through the things which he suffered-and the cross was the great test for Him. And yet He says: "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet

not as I will, but as You will." Matthew 26:39

So for our answer to today's question. Why was Jesus tempted by Satan? Jesus, tempted by Satan in all things upon this earth even while He was in physical weakness by the fasting for forty days, He passed the temptations by being without sin and becoming our perfect example to rely upon when we feel vulnerable to the same Tempter. Yes, we will fall into sin, but we have an advocate with the Father: Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The King of kings and Lord of lords who was manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Hebrews 9:26-28). Let us learn obedience to Him as He learned obedience to the Father.
