Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

What will the truth of the word do?

While Jesus was by the well talking to the Samaritan woman, she said, "'Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.' Jesus said to her, 'Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father. You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshippers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth.' The woman said to Him, 'I know the Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); When that one comes, He will declare all things to us.' Jesus said to her, 'I who speak to you am He.'" (John 4:20-26) Later, when He was before Pilate, Pilate asked Him, "'Pilate therefore said to Him, 'So you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.' Pilate said to Him, 'What is truth?' And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, 'I find no guilt in Him.'" (John 18:37-38)

To find the answer to our question, "What will the truth of the word do?" we begin our search by looking at Jesus and the comment about Himself, "I am the way and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me." (John 14:6). So we can see from this statement by the word that Jesus is the way in this life that we walk upon this earth that we must mirror the way that He walked to life (1 John 2:6). Jesus says that He is the truth, so we know that the word He has given us is truth, or the true knowledge for life eternal (John 17:17; 1 John 2:25). We must recognize that God desires (1 John 4:10) that we should overcome sin by walking in the righteousness. "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. And if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us." (1 John 1:8-10)

We must recognize that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God the Father. We have the choice of walking on this earth as slaves to sin (Romans 6:12-16) with the result of eternal death, or we can do something about it. When we are ready to make a turn in our lives by repenting of our sins (Acts 2:38) and confessing our Lord as the Son of God (Romans 10:9-10) and then we are to die to sin (Romans 6:2) by being buried in a like manner of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection, we too are buried in the watery grave and raised up in the newness of life and having died the old man of sin we raise up the new self in Christ, "Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in the newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves of sin; for he who has died is freed from sin." (Romans 6:3-7)

So we see that we are freed from sin in the grave of baptism which puts us on the "way" to eternal life, (1 Peter 3:21) and being raised up in the newness of life to have died to sin to then be also freed from sin. We must recognize that this is a spiritual death and we are raised up into a new life of Christ. Therefore, if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on the earth, for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4) We have been raised up as the "new self" who is being renewed to the true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him (Colossians 3:10). This renewal of our minds is done by the word of God as we study even though our outer body continues to age and decay (Romans 12:2 & 2 Corinthians 4:16).

Therefore, to finalize the answer to our question, we turn to read, "Jesus therefore was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, 'If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32)

And there we have the answer to our question. The truth shall make us free! It sets us free from sin as we study His word, believe the word as truth and abide in His word in obedience to the truth as we have those sins washed away in baptism (1 Peter 3:21) and continue to walk with Him for life!

Jesus set the perfect example of learning obedience to the Father by His suffering on the cross as He sets us free from the sin that can so easily entangle us (Hebrews 12:1-2) and expects no less than our obedience to Him in our lives upon this earth for life eternal, "Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 5:8-9)

Yes, Jesus is the source of eternal salvation to those that obey Him and abide in Him and walk in the light, as He is the light. (1 John 2:1-6) Jesus said, "…Sanctify them in truth, Thy word is truth." (John 17:17) Let us "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of God." (2 Timothy 2:15) May we study the word of God so we are prepared to please Him for freedom from sin and for life eternal!
