Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Isaiah the prophet wrote, "And all your sons will be taught of the Lord; and the well being of your sons will be great. In righteousness you will be established; you will be far from oppression, for you will not fear; and from terror, for it will not come near you." (Isaiah 54:13-14). And so the prophecy of the coming Messiah is set concerning His teaching the people that they may be established in righteousness. And He indeed did come teaching, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." (Matthew 5:6). He said some difficult things for the common Jewish people who looked up to their earthly spiritual leaders, "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:20), and again, "Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house upon the rock." (Matthew 7:24) Concerning His kingdom, He taught Nicodemus, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of the water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (John 3:5), and then, "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field." (Matthew 13:44), and He also warns, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be rooted up." (Matthew 15:13), and says, " All authority has been given to Me on heaven and earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)
That brings us to our question, "Jesus taught the multitude from whose boat?". When Jesus began gathering His disciples, He came into Galilee preaching the gospel of God, " 'The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.' And as He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, 'Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.' And they immediately left the nets and followed Him. And going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending nets. And immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and they went away to follow Him. And they went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. And they were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes." (Mark 1:15-22). After Jesus' crucifixion, Peter and John healed the lame blind man-more than forty years old (Acts 4:22), who used to be set by the temple gate called Beautiful and beg for alms, which, when healed, amazed the people who had gathered there.-even the leaders (Acts 3:1-11),
"Now they observed the confidence of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were marveling, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they began to confer with one another, saying, 'What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all men who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. But in order that it may not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to any man in this name.' And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, 'Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking what we have seen and heard." (Acts 4:13-20).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "Now it came about while the multitude were pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them, and were washing their nets. And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the multitudes from the boat. And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, 'Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.' And Simon answered and said, 'Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but at your bidding I will let down the nets.' And when they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish; and their nets began to break; and they signaled to their partners in the other boat, for them to come and help them. And they came, and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, 'Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!' For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also James and John sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, 'Do not fear, from now on you will be fishers of men.' And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him." (Luke 5:1-11)
So there we have the answer to our question, as the boat that Jesus taught in was none other than Simon Peter's!
May we be ready to give up all the treasures of this earth for the heavenly treasure, "For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:18)
