Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

At age 12, who did Jesus question?

Jesus, born in Bethlehem and by a virgin according to prophecy. Taken to Egypt to escape the wrath of king Herod while he lived and then returning to Nazareth of Galilee to again fulfill prophecy to be called out of Egypt and to be later called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:23).

To Luke chapter two we go to find Jesus growing in strength and wisdom and the grace of God was upon Him. Jesus grew as any child did, but His development was favored with wisdom beyond His years as we shall see. Joseph and Mary travel each year to Jerusalem, the capital of Judea, to fulfill the Old Testament Law's requirement of the males to return for the three major feasts including the Passover feast that remembers the last plague on Egypt of the death of the firstborn and the passing over of it to those that put the sacrificial blood on the two door post and lintel (Exodus 12:22).

After staying in Jerusalem the required number of days, they return in a caravan to Nazareth and they suppose Jesus to be with either their relatives or friends as they travel. After one days journey, they search for Him and after not being able to find Him they return to Jerusalem. After searching for Him for three more days, they finally look in the temple, the official headquarters of the Old Testament Law to the Jewish people at that time. And to their astonishment, there is this twelve year old boy, who up to this point, in their mind, had probably been no trouble to them of and kind, until now as Mary says to Him:

Luke 2:48 "Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I have been

anxiously looking for You."

There is no doubt that they would be a little put out as they did not know where He was for five days.

Jesus' response:

Luke 2:49 "Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be

in My Father's house? "

Or, you should have looked in the temple first.

So for our answer today, Jesus, sitting in a sort of 'forum' both listening, questioning, and answering questions of the teachers of the temple of Jerusalem, he capital of Judea where they gather to study and learn and teach and were more than a little taken by Him:

Luke 2:47 And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.

Yes, the teachers of the temple of Jerusalem who were more than amazed that a twelve year old boy could have so much wisdom and understanding, and then to find out that He was from Galilee, just as was spoken of the Apostles in Acts 2:7 when the Holy Spirit fell upon them and the men that gathered around them, heard them speak in their own language, gasped out, "are not these Galileans?", or unlearned men. If they only knew who He was that sat at their feet, the very Messiah whom they searched for so long!

When back in Nazareth, Jesus kept in subjection to Joseph and Mary and continued to grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men.

So there you have the answer to our question today, the teachers of the temple of Jerusalem.
