Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

What shall make us free?

This country has been founded by people who have given their lives so others could have freedom both politically and religiously. Many in this world have desired this same freedom and yet have not achieved it. But we can find freedom in this life no matter the political agenda that might surround us
(Colossians 3:11).

To find the answer to our question we begin our search by looking at Jesus and the comment about Himself in John 14:6, "I am the way and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.". So we can see from this statement by the word that Jesus is the way in this life that we walk upon this earth that we must mirror the way that He walked to life (1 John 2:6). Jesus says that He is the truth, so we know that the word He has given us is truth, or the true knowledge for life eternal (John 17:17; 1 John 2:25). We must recognize that God desires (1 John 4:10) that we should overcome sin by walking in the righteousness,

1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. And if

we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all

unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

We must recognize that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God the Father. We have the choice of walking on this earth as slaves to sin (Romans 6:12-16) with the result of eternal death, or we can do something about it. When we are ready to make a turn in our lives by repenting of our sins and confessing our Lord as the Son of God and then we are to die to sin (Romans 6:2) by being buried in a like manner of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection, we too are buried in the watery grave and raised up in the newness of life and having died the old man of sin we raise up the new self in Christ,

Romans 6:3-7 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the Glory of the Father, so we too might walk in the newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves of sin; for he who has died is freed from sin.

So we see that we are freed from sin in the grave of baptism which puts us on the "way" to eternal life, (1 Peter 3:21) and being raised up in the newness of life to have died to sin to then be also freed from sin. We must recognize that this is a spiritual death and we are raised up into a new life of Christ,

Colossians 3:1-4 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where

Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are

on the earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life,

is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

We have been raised up as the "new self" who is being renewed to the true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him (Colossians 3:10). This renewal of our minds is done by the word of God as we study even though our outer body continues to age and decay (Romans 12:2 & 2 Corinthians 4:16).

And so to finalize the answer to our question, we turn to John 8:31-32 where Jesus says to His believers, "If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." And there we have the answer to our question, the truth shall make us free. It sets us free from sin as we study His word and abide in it in obedience to the truth as we have those sins washed away in baptism (1 Peter 3:21) and continue to walk with Him for life!

Jesus set the perfect example of learning obedience to the Father by His suffering on the cross as He sets us free from the sin that can so easily entangle us (Hebrews 12:1-2) and expects no less than our obedience to Him in our lives upon this earth for life eternal.

Hebrews 5:8-9 Although He was a Son, HE learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made Perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Yes, Jesus is the source of eternal salvation to those that obey Him and abide in Him and walk in the light as He is the light (1 John 2:1-6). Jesus said in John 17:17 "Sanctify them in truth, your word is truth.". Let us "be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of God." (1 Timothy 2:15). Let us study the word of God so we are prepared to please Him for freedom from sin and for life eternal!
