Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Whose daughter did Jesus raise from the dead?

The question that has burned many candles through time eternal is this: "When this life as we know it comes to an end, what's next?" The Sadducees are convinced that there is no life after this physical existence upon this earth ends, while the Pharisees think otherwise, "For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit; but the Pharisees acknowledge them all." (Acts 23:8).

Although the rich man looked to life after this, he was surprised to find himself in the place of torments while he saw Lazarus, the poor man who used to lay at his gate while the dogs licked his sores in paradise across the great gulf between them. So he asked Abraham at least have Lazarus go back and warn his brothers since he knew the lifestyle they led also would have them end up in his same place, as he said, "And he said, 'Then I beg you, Father, that you send him to my father's house-for I have five brothers-that he may warn them, lest they also come to this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' But he said, 'No Father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!' But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.'" (Luke 16:27-31).

That brings us to our question, "Whose daughter did Jesus raise from the dead?" To find the answer to our question, we turn to the book of Mark where we find a Synagogue official who falls at the feet of Jesus and entreated Him, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, that she may get well and live."(Mark 5:23) Now it would be interesting to have known what this official thought of Jesus before his daughter was sick as many of them had rejected Jesus and a few that believed were still not courageous enough to confess Him for fear of being put out of the Synagogue (John 12:42), but this is mere speculation-but interesting to think of how ones attitude and pride can be set aside when ones own loved one is at death's door.

Needless to say, Jesus begins following him to his house and they were met by some that were coming to them from the official's house who said to them, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?" (Mark 5:35). What tragic news to hear for anyone's child to die much beyond their time! And of course, it is obvious they may have witnessed or heard of the miracles performed by the Lord, but they did not expect what was to come next, as Jesus told the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid any longer, only believe." (Mark 5:36). Jesus did His miracles to profess Himself as the Christ, and so in this case He may have perceived that the official had not believed in Him before and now was going to instill that belief! And when they came to the house, Jesus did not allow any to come into the house except Peter, James, John and the father and mother of the girl (Luke 8:51) where they found the mourners weeping and lamenting for her and Jesus said, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep." (Mark 5:39). And they began to laugh at Him, and then Jesus put them out of the house. He took the father and mother and His companions into the room where the daughter was, and when He took up the child's hand He said, "Little Girl, I say to you, arise!" And immediately the girl rose and began to walk; for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this; and He said that something should be given her to eat." (Mark 5:41-43).

What a glory it would have been to be there to see this little girl rise off that bed, and to see the parents as they beheld their daughter who was indeed dead, now walking before their very eyes, the mother and the synagogue official whose name was "Jairus" "And behold,, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw him, he fell at His feet" (Mark 5:22).

And so there we have the answer to our question as the synagogue official who entreated Jesus so earnestly for his daughters life with great fear for it, was to witness one of the greater events performed by one who was despised and envied by many of his peers in that day!

Let us understand the lesson that this message delivers and be ready for the life that is to come and recognize the authority of our Lord's message in the New Testament that brings everlasting life to them that live by it!
