Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Oh, those prophets of God, His messengers (2 Chronicles 36:15), and His servants such as Zechariah whom He told, "In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo saying, 'The Lord was very angry with your fathers. Therefore say to them, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, 'Return to Me,' declares the Lord of hosts, 'that I may return to you,' says the Lord of hosts. 'Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, 'Return now from your evil deeds,'" But they did not listen or give heed to Me,' declares the Lord. 'Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, 'As the Lord of hosts purposed to do to us accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.'"'" (Zechariah 1:1-6). Jesus declared to the Jews as He walked this earth concerning their not accepting Him as the Messiah as well as how they and their fathers treated the prophets of old and those to come, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, 'If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the shedding of the blood of the prophets.' Consequently you bear witness against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up then the measure of the guilt of your fathers. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how shall you escape the sentence of hell? Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city, that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Truly I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling. Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!" (Matthew 23:29-38) So there we see the servant of God, His prophet, killed by the very ones that they were sent to help guide back to God and they too were unwilling to receive him as God's prophet, or did want to hear what he was saying by the word of our Lord. Jesus' prophecy concerning future prophets also held so true as Stephen was stoned (Acts 7:51-60), the apostles were flogged (Acts 5:40), the Apostle James was put to death by Herod which pleased the Jews (Acts 12:1-3), while Paul recounts the trials he faces at the hands of both the Jews as well as the Gentiles. (1 Corinthians 11:21-31)
That brings us to our question, "Which prophet is married to a prophetess?". Many of the prophets of the Old Testament are looking forward to the coming of the Messiah which is fulfilled by Jesus Christ, but they did not live to see their own prophecies revealed through Him, even though they spoke of Him, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear you a son, and she will call His name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14) (Matthew 1:22-23), "For a child will be born to us; a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6) (Luke 2:11), "Then a shoot will spring up from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit." (Isaiah 11:1) (Luke 3:23), "Therefore thus says the Lord God, 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, a costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed. (Isaiah 28:16) (1 Peter 2:4-6), "Surely our grief's He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed." (Isaiah 53:4-5) (Romans 5:6-8 & Mark 14:43-72, 15:1-37), and "His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death, because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth." (Isaiah 53:9) (Matthew 27:57-60).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "Then the Lord said to me, 'Take for yourself a large tablet and write on it in ordinary letters: Swift is the booty, speedy is the prey. And I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.' So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, 'Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz;" (Isaiah 8:1-3).
So there we have the answer to our question, as the prophet who married a prophetess was none other than Isaiah!
During the reign of Hezekiah, a good king, the Assyrians, who had destroyed the ten tribes of Israel already, now besieged the city of Jerusalem and after King Hezekiah and Isaiah prayed to the Lord, an angel of the Lord destroyed every mighty warrior of Assyria in one night! History says Isaiah lived on through to the reign of King Hezekiah's son, Manasseh, who was very wicked and history says that Isaiah was sawn in two during his pagan ways (2 Chronicles 33:1-10). Maybe that is who is referred to as we read," they were sawn in two," (Hebrews 11:37-38)!
