Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
When Jesus performed His first
recorded miracle, Mary, who had cherished the many things said about
this Child (Luke 2:19) tells Him;
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the
mother of Jesus was there;
2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have
no wine."
4 And Jesus said to her, "Woman,
what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet
come."
5 His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do
it." (John 2:1-5).
By the answer of Jesus we understand
that she was wanting Him to reveal Himself as the Christ without any
question, which would mean being raised from the dead. The timetable
for that was a few years down the road, and so He tells her;1
After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling
to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near.
3 Therefore His brothers said to Him, "Leave here and go into Judea,
so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are
doing.
4 "For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be
known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the
world."
5 For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
6 So Jesus said to them, "My
time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.
7
"The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it,
that its deeds are evil.
8
"Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because
My time has not yet fully come."
9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
(John 7:1-9)
When May and Jesus' brothers came to
see Him, probably to take Him away from public view because he at the
very least was an embarrassment to the brothers, to which Jesus
says;
31 Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside
they sent word to Him and called Him.
32 A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, "Behold,
Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for
You."
33 Answering them, He said,
"Who are
My mother and My brothers?"
34 Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He said,
"Behold My
mother and My brothers!
35
"For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and
mother." (Mark
3:31-35).
That brings us to our question.
Let us read;
21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must
go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief
priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third
day. (Matthew 16:21).
Jesus told Phillip and Andrew;
23 And Jesus answered them, saying,
"The hour
has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the
earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much
fruit.
25
"He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this
world will keep it to life eternal.
26
"If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My
servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor
him.
Jesus Foretells His
Death
27
"Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save
Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
28
"Father, glorify Your name" Then
a voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will
glorify it again."
29 So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that
it had thundered; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to
Him."
30 Jesus answered and said, "This
voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes.
31
"Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be
cast out.
32
"And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to
Myself."
33 But He
was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to
die.
34 The crowd then answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that
the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You
say, 'The
Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who
is this Son of Man?"
35 So Jesus said to them,
"For a little while longer the Light is among you Walk while you have
the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in
the darkness does not know where he goes.
36 "While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may
become sons of Light "
These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from
them. (John 12:23-36)
Now we see that Jesus has changed
from the hour not being ready to, "The hour has come", and indeed His
time on this earth was coming to a close as He had just entered
Jerusalem the week of His crucifixion (John 12:1-22), and we
can see the people expected the Christ to remain on the earth forever
and since Jesus said He was going to die, then they must be wrong
about Jesus being the Christ, maybe a prophet, and so the question,
"Who is this Son of Man?" , and then also the resulting conclusion by
the multitude concerning His being the Christ in the following
verse;
37 But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they
were not believing in Him. (John 12:37).
So then, for the answer to our
question we turn and read;
21 Martha then said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my
brother would not have died.
22 "Even now I know that whatever
You ask of God, God will give You."
23 Jesus said to her, "Your
brother will rise again."
24 Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the
resurrection on the last day."
25 Jesus said to her, "I
am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live
even if he dies,
26
and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you
believe this?"
27 She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the
Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."
(John 11:21-27).
And so there we have the answer to our question as Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life", to Martha, whom then makes the good confession of her belief that Jesus is indeed the Christ, the Son of God!
May we too be ready to make the good confession to those who ask of our faith in Him for life eternal, for indeed He was raised up at the right time for all mankind, but especially for those that stand fast with him (1 Peter 4:12-19 & Hebrews 10:1-31)!
