Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Micah cries out about men, "The godly person has perished from the land, and there is no upright person among men. All of them wait for bloodshed; each of them hunts the other with a net. Concerning evil, both hands do it well. The prince asks, also the judge, for a bribe, and a great man speaks the desire of the soul; so they weave it together. The best of them is like a briar, the most upright like a thorn hedge. The day when you post a watchman, your punishment will come. Then confusion will occur. Do not trust in a neighbor; do not have confidence in a friend. From her who lies in your bosom guard your lips. For son treats father contemptuously, daughter rises up against her mother, daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man's enemies are the men of his own household. But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall, I will rise; though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me. I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against Him, until He pleads my and executes justice for me. He will bring me out to the light, and I will see his righteousness." (Micah 7:2-9). Jesus said, "And if anyone hears My sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world." (John 12:47), and again, "Do not judge lest you be judged." (Matthew 7:1). One would almost come to the conclusion that we cannot and should not judge.
That brings us to our question, "Can we judge?" Jesus was invited to a Pharisees house to dine with him and while reclined at the table a woman who was a sinner came in and broke a vial of perfume and covered Jesus' feet with it and her tears while wiping them with her hair. Simon thought to himself, "If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner. And Jesus answered and said to him, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' And he replied, 'Say it, Teacher.' 'A certain moneylender had two debtors; one who owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him more?' Simon answered and said, 'I suppose the one whom he forgave more.' And He said to him, 'You have judged correctly.' (Luke 7:39-43). Jesus did commend Simon's ability to judge that situation correctly, and yet he did not recognize his own sin until Jesus then explained to him that the woman who was a great sinner, loved much because she was forgiven of all her sins while Simon himself gave Jesus none of the courtesies of a guest in his home.
Paul tells the church at Corinth who allowed a man
to live with his mother as his wife, "For I, on my part, though
absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has
so committed this, as though I were present." (1 Corinthians
5:3). He then tells them, "I wrote to you in my letter not to
associate with immoral people. I did not at all mean with the immoral
people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with
idolaters; for then you would have to go out of the world. But
actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother
if he should be an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a
reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler-not even to eat with such a
one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge
those who are within the church? But those who are outside, God
judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves."
(1 Corinthians 5:9-13).
And so for our answer, we turn and read as Jesus says, "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment." (John 7:24). So there we have the answer to our question as we must judge righteously and not have the same problem ourselves when we judge someone, "For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. And why to you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Matthew 7:2-5).
May we judge on this earth righteously and
do according to His word,
"He who rejects Me, and
does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke
is what will judge him at the last day."
(John 12:48). And again, "For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his
deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or
bad."
(2 Corinthians 5:10)
