Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Paul spoke to those at Ephesus about the mystery of His will, "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise," (Ephesians 1:13). So, 'The message of truth', reveals His mystery through the gospel, that those who believe these words of truth and are obedient to Him (Hebrews 5:8-9) are-indeed-truly 'in Him'. We are called by the gospel through word of mouth, teaching or preaching, or by the written word, "And it was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brethren, stand firm and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us." (2 Thessalonians 2:14-15) Paul says this, concerning the word of God, "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intensions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12) His gospel had power, "for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake." (1Thessalonians 1:5) Paul tells the brethren concerning the word of truth, the gospel, that it is bearing fruit in all the world, "We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel, which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth;" (Colossians 1:3-6).
And although the called out were once alien to the way that leads to life, as they continue in the faith, it will be for life eternal, "And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach-if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister." (Colossians 1:21-23)
That brings us to our question, "Is there a different gospel?". Even during that first century church there began to be a teaching of error that began to creep in. Paul warns us, "For the time will come when they will no endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths," (2 Timothy 4:3-4).
Peter also warns us, "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who brought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;" (2 Peter 2:1-2)
John write, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world." (1 John 4:1)
Jude warns us, "Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our Master and Lord, Jesus Christ." (Jude 3-4).
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still striving to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:6-10)
So there we have the answer to our question, as there is not another gospel, save the one taught by the apostles through the Holy Spirit! Paul tells the brethren at Ephesus, "There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all." (Ephesians 4:4-6) Since our faith comes by hearing and our hearing by the word of god (Romans 10:17) it would make good sense that through God's one word we would find one truth and that one faith that would lead us to Christ! Remember this, "for God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints." (1 Corinthians 14:33)
Let us also be careful how we speak the gospel, lest we be found distorting it by adding to it or subtracting from it (Revelation 22:18-19), but recognizing the power that lies within the truth of it as Paul declares, "Thus, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:15-16)
