Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
While Jesus was teaching in the temple the Jewish leaders said to Him, "And so they were saying to Him, 'Who are You?' Jesus said to them, 'What have I been saying from the beginning? I have many things to speak and judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.' They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. Jesus therefore said, 'When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.' As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him. Jesus therefore was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, 'If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.' (John 8:25-32). Jesus told the multitudes, "Let your light shine before men is such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven. Do not think I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth shall pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away form the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the lest of the commandments, and so teaches others, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:16-20).
That brings us to our question, "What will so easily entangle us?". In the parable of the sower Jesus says, "Behold, the sower went out to sow; and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came ate them up. And others fell upon the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they have no depth of soil. But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. And others fell on the good soil, and yielded a crop, some a hundred fold, some sixty, and some thirty. He who has an ear let him hear." (Matthew 13:3-9). Jesus explains the parable of the sower as the word being taught and the first does not understand it, while the one in rocky places believes in it, but his heart has no firm root for it and is immediately falls away when light affliction comes upon him because of the word, then the next is among thorns, and the deceitfulness of riches and the cares of the world choke the word and it becomes unfruitful and again they fall away. But the one who has good soil, the word not only thrives, but bears much fruit (Matthew 13:18-23)!
"Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of the God abides forever." (1 John 2:15-17). Paul reminds the brethren at Colossae, "And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach, if indeed you continue in faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister." (Colossians 1:21-23).
And so for our answer to our question, we turn to read, "Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and loose heart." (Hebrews 12:1-3).
So there we have our answer, as it is "sin" that will so easily entangle us upon this earth! While Demas deserted Paul for the world (1 Timothy 4:10), Diotrephes loved to be first among men before the truth of the word (3 John 9), nor go astray from the truth like Hymenaeus and Philetus (2 Timothy 2:16-18).
Temptation to sin is not from God, it is from within by the lust that conceives and brings forth sin-which brings forth death-do not be deceived (James 1:13-16). Paul says he runs the race of life to win by buffeting his body to make it his slave so that after he has preached to others he is not disqualified and so receive that wreath imperishable (1 Corinthians 9:23-27)!
