Welcome and thank you for taking a Bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Which book mentions "Calvary"?

Concerning mankind the Lord tells us, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23).

When the Pharisees asked John the Baptist why he was baptizing if he was not the Christ; John answered them saying, "I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. It is He who comes after me, the thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He on behalf of whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.' " (John 1:26-30). Although John the Baptist was 6 months older than Jesus (Luke 31-38), John says Jesus existed before him, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. (John 1:1-3), and again, And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14).

And so the Lamb of God, who existed from the beginning, becomes that eternal sacrifice for mankind and the sins of the world are redeemed to those who love Him (1 John 5:1-6), For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls. (1 Peter 2:21-25).

That brings us to our question, 'Which book mentions "Calvary"?'. After Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must be killed and that He would be raised on the third day, From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." (Matthew 16:21-23).

Peter seemed to expect that physical kingdom to be established upon this earth with Jesus as the king forever as he tries to set Jesus straight on how this should all unfold, just as the multitudes tried to take Him by force and make Him king of this earth (John 6:15). Even the mother of the sons of Zebedee requested that they could serve on His right and left in His kingdom, thinking that it would again be a physical kingdom, to which the Lord explains, But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to Him, "We are able." He said to them, "My cup you shall drink; but to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father." (Matthew 20:22-23). The cup that He was about to drink would be upon the hill of Calvary, Golgotha, the Place of the Skull! (John 19:17) Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, (Hebrews 5:8-9). Just as Jesus learned obedience to Calvary, may we learn obedience to Him for salvation!

So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.î (King James version Luke 23:33).

So there we have the answer to our question, as it is the book of Luke that uses the word 'Calvary'! The New American Standard uses 'the Place of the Skull', while we read, And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink. (Matthew 27:33-34) It was thought that this place was either a small hill where there was a quarry that looked like a skull by the west gate (Hebrews 13:12) or outside the city of Jerusalem or about a half mile from the north gate where their was a garden. Golgothaís Latin name is 'Calvariae' and as history says when it was translated to English it was converted to 'Calvary'!

We all must realize the importance of this humble and loving act by the Son of God, Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Hebrews 12:1-3). Let us run the race for life!
