Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
In tandem with this question, by definition to redeem is to set free, to save one from a state of sinfulness and its consequences. Paul says, For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. (Romans 5:10), and also, But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. (Romans 6:22) So, by the death of Jesus upon the cross we can be set free from the clutches of sin and its consequences for the outcome of eternal life to those who understand that life upon this earth is for more than our enjoyment for the short while we have to spend in this physical from.
Isaiah leaves no doubt about the redeemer, Our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name, The Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 47:4), and then, Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, "I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go." (Isaiah 48:17), and also, "A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob," declares the Lord. (Isaiah 59:20). And indeed a Redeemer did come to Zion as Jesus came to earth as a man and allowed Himself to be crucified upon the cross as a sacrificial lamb for the sins of all mankind.
That brings us to our question, Who said, "I know that my Redeemer lives."? Paul wrote to Titus; For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. (Titus 2:11-14) The sacrificial Lamb redeems His own and they are those who desire to please Him through obedience to Him, Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, (Hebrews 5:8-9). We are instructed to love Him with a Godly love; By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. (1 John 5:2-3). We find that His commandments are His Word as He is the Word and brings us the word of truth (John 17:17), By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked. (1 John 2:3-6)
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read, "My relatives have failed, And my intimate friends have forgotten me. Those who live in my house and my maids consider me a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight. I call to my servant, but he does not answer; I have to implore him with my mouth. My breath is offensive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own brothers. Even young children despise me; I rise up and they speak against me. All my associates abhor me, and those I love have turned against me. My bone clings to my skin and my flesh, and I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth. Pity me, pity me, O you my friends, for the hand of God has struck me. Why do you persecute me as God does, and are not satisfied with my flesh? Oh that my words were written! Oh that they were inscribed in a book! That with an iron stylus and lead they were engraved in the rock forever! As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will take His stand on the earth." (Job 19:14-25).
So there we have the answer to our question as it is none other than Job who speaks of his desertion by his close friends, even in his own house as his servants and children look down upon him, and even his own wife says, Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!" (Job 2:9), and yet Job says, "I know that my Redeemer lives,"!
May we be as strong and confident as Job concerning our Redeemer and recognize the importance of having our sins washed away in baptism 'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.' (Acts 22:16), and then staying steadfast for life eternal, Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)!
