Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:

Where is the treasure?

Oh, that treasure map! The one that might, just might, lead to earthly treasures beyond our wildest dreams! How many of us have thought, "If only we had a million dollars, it would end all our sorrow and distress and bring us eternal joy!" But would it? "Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure and turmoil with it." (Proverbs 15:16).

That brings us to our question, "Where is the treasure?". The Lord knows that man will desire the riches of this earth and tells the rich, or those who think they are, "Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth eaten. Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!" (James 5:1-3). Again he tells those who desire riches, "But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang." (1 Timothy 6:9-10).

Notice, some of these people have even wandered away from the faith. This is all because they long for the deceitfulness of the riches of this earth, "And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful." (Matthew 13:22)!

The Lord tells the church of Laodicea, "I know your deeds, that your are neither cold nor hot; I would that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. Because you say, "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,' and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked."(Revelation 2:15-17). Being spewed out of the Lord's mouth does not sound like a good thing!

While to the church of Smyrna He tells them, "I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy by those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear that which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days . Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:9-10). Does this sound better?

So where is the real treasure? To find our answer we read, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Matthew 6:19-21). So there we have the answer to our question as the true treasure is found in heaven!

"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid; and from the over it he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field." (Matthew 13:44).

Let us find the true treasure of heaven, not the deceitfulness of the riches of this earth, but the treasure of Christ that will bear fruit for life eternal, "For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf, for those who are in Laodicea, and for those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery, that is Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." "6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him," (Colossians 2:1-3 & 6).
