Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
Jesus amazed the multitudes as He spoke as one having authority and not as the scribes (Matthew 7:28-29). To help their belief in Him, He performed many miracles such as for the paralytic whom was brought to Him and Jesus tells him, "Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven." And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This fellow blasphemes." And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, "Why are you thinking evil in your hearts? For which is easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say , 'Rise and walk'? "But in order that you may know the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"-- then He said to the paralytic, "Rise, take up your bed and go home." And he rose, and went home. But when the multitudes saw this they were filled with awe, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men. (Matthew 9:2-8)
That brings us to our question, "Who asks Jesus to heal his servant without His coming?". Jesus, with a great multitude following Him (Matthew 8:1, 5), enters Capernaum and a centurion comes up to Him, and entreats Jesus, and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented." Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." (Matthew 8:6-7) But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. "For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it." (Matthew 8:8-9)
Here was a man, a Gentile, with great authority upon this earth, and yet he showed great humility before Jesus as he said he was unworthy for Jesus to come into his home. He recognized the great power and authority with which Jesus worked, and so he told Jesus that He did not need to enter his home to heal his servant, possibly because he was a gentile, he may have known it would not be good for Jesus to enter his home, but in either case, Jesus marvels when He heard the man's words.
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read: Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, "Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed that very moment. (Matthew 8:10-13)
So there we have the answer to our question, as the man who asks Jesus to heal his servant without His coming, is the centurion, one with authority over about one hundred men in the Roman army! Just as the centurion recognized the authority of Jesus, so must we as we all work under subjection to ruling authority upon this earth, why not our Lord for eternal life?
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. " Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20).
Paul tells us: But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. (James 1:22), and he tells Titus that the elders must be; holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. (Titus 1:9). May we too be holding the word of life with sound doctrine and be ready to contend earnestly for the faith (Jude 3)!
