Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
We are all on a journey upon this earth to find a better country, a spiritual country that is better than the countries upon this planet which we will all also leave (Hebrews 11:14-16). There is a city set upon Mount Zion where the church of the first born are enrolled for heaven and for those that are spiritually minded upon this earth, recognize the test before us (Hebrews 12:22-23 & 2 Corinthians 13:5). God has set His plan in motion according to His will and not the way of man (1 Thessalonians 2:13, Acts 2:23 & 4:12).
We are to:
Philippians 2:12-16 So then my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only,
but now much more in my absence, Work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who
is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or
disputing; so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above
reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the
world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did
not run in vain nor toil in vain.
We must be diligent in our study of His word to be approved of Him as we handle the word of truth accurately (2 Timothy 2:15) and recognize that the word is inspired of God and profitable for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). While many will reject that there is a God (Romans 1:18-32), Some, to be sure, will recognize God and His word, but when the care of the world come upon them, they will give in to the temptations of the world about them (Matthew 12:18-23, 37-40). Once saved always saved?
Hebrews 6:4-6 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly
gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted of the good word of God and the
powers of the age to come, and then to have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to
repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
Yes, those that taste of the good word of God can fall away and if they are so hardened against the word of God there is no way to soften their hearts anymore. However, to better understand this part of the passage, we turn to
Hebrews 10 26-27 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no
longer remains sacrifice For sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire which
will consume the adversaries.
So, the sin that leads to spiritual death is the one that one does not want to quit and goes on sinning willfully. The Lord, who became the source of eternal salvation by learning obedience to the Father's plan by the cross (Hebrews 5:8-9), consistently warns us to pay close attention to His word, " lest we drift away from it" (Hebrews 2:1), "Take care brethren, that there not be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God." (Hebrews 3:12) " men who have gone astray from the truth" (2 Timothy 2:18) "keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith." (1 Timothy 1:19). So, yes we can "fall", "drift", "go astray", and "shipwreck" the faith we once had in us.
So, to finalize our answer of "Is the way to heaven broad or narrow?", we turn to:
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to
destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that
leads to life, and there are few who find it.
And so there we have our answer to our question. The way to heaven is narrow and few are those who find it, while the way to destruction is broad and many will find that. Why will the road to destruction be a traffic jam? The "test of life is difficult as many will fall into the trap of only pleasing self instead of the word of God, or at the very least of not even recognizing the Creator.
Matthew 7:21-24 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he
who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord,
Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your Name cast out demons, and in Your name perform
many miracles?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice
lawlessness.' Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts upon them, may be compared
to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
People will try to find God in their own way and will be found lacking (2 Timothy 3:2-5),
Galatians 1:6-10 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ . But even if we or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel that is contrary to what we have preached to you, he is accursed! As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is accursed. For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still striving to please men I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
We may all recognize that the disorderly will not reach heaven if they continue on the same pathway of destruction, but what is oftentimes not recognized is that it will be with difficulty that the righteous will be saved (1 Peter 4:18). So we must be quick to hear and become doers of His word, mirroring ourselves to Him through His word for life (James 1:19-25)!
