Bible Break

Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to test your knowledge of God's word. This week's question:

Is the Old Testament binding on us religiously today?

The Old Testament, a book of laws, history, poetry, and prophecies, much of it given to the Israelites, a remnant of people on the earth (Deuteronomy 7:7), by Moses at Mount Sinai in Exodus chapter 20, spoken through angels, that proved unalterable (Hebrews 2:1-4). Paul says that the Old Law came because of sin in Galatians 3 and that he would not have known sin without the Law, which came 430 years after the seed of promise to Abraham and that seed was Christ.

So the Old testament, whose prophets tell of a new covenant to come, (Jeremiah 31:31-34) is the tutor that leads us to the coming of the Messiah (Micah 5:2), who's message would not be believed, and would be despised and forsaken by men, pierced through for our iniquities, assigned with wicked men, and yet a rich man in death (Isaiah 53). As this tutor leads us to Christ to be justified by faith, (Romans 10:17 Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God) and since faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor (Galatians 3:17-29).

Hebrews 10:1 says the Old Law was only a shadow of the good things to come, namely Christ, and in verse 9 he says "He takes away the first in order to establish the second".

Hebrews 8:6-7 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the Mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises. For if the first Covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion sought for a second.

But why, you might ask. Jesus says it oh, so well:

Luke 24:25-26 "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have Spoken! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"

So to Galatians 5:1-5 we go to finalize our answer to today's question. For it says that Jesus set us free from the Old Law, which was a yoke of slavery! And if we receive it, it will be of no benefit to us, not only that, but if we follow even a part of it, we are obligated to keep all of it, and we are severed from Christ. Those who are seeking to be justified by the Old Law, you have fallen from grace! For it is by faith, the word, we wait for the hope of righteousness, a hope anchored in Christ!

Did Jesus do away with the Old Law, you again might ask.

Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the prophets. I did not come to Abolish, but to fulfill."

So there we have the answer to our question, a resounding no, unless you want that yoke of slavery and then to be, severed from Christ and fallen from grace. I pray you do not.
