Welcome and thank you for taking a
bible break to test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1-2), and within the creation of earth was vegetation-plants, Then God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with seed in them, on the earth"; and it was so. And the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:11-12) We can see that their was no evolutionary forces at work as each was after its kind. The same thing can be said for animals and insects (Genesis 1:24-25) and of course man was created as "man" and it was good (Genesis 1:26-31).
That brings us to our question, "Which plant was used to purify lepers?". Many plants mentioned in the bible included Aloes (Psalms 45:8) a fragrant wood used for perfume and embalming by the Egyptians and also for the body of Jesus by Nicodemus and Joseph of Aramathea (John 19-39). There was also, mint, rue, and dill of which tithes were paid sometimes more carefully than the weightier things of the Law (Matthew 23:23 & Luke 11:42), garlic (Numbers 11:5). Balm of the balsam tree was used medicinally (Ezekiel 27:17), and pomegranate was used as ornaments to help skirt the high priestís robe (Exodus 28:33-34). Also, coriander was used both medicinally and as a spice (Exodus 16:31). We also read of lentiles from which Jacob made a red stew (Genesis 25:29-31), and the leek is an herb (Job 8:12). Lilies were mentioned by Jesus; "Consider the lilies, how they grow; they neither toil or spin; but I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these." (Luke 12:27) And then there is the olive for oil (Judges 15:5), flax for linen cloth (Deuteronomy 22:11), the fig used for both medicinally and for the diet (2 Kings 20:7 & Jeremiah 24:2).
Hyssop, which was describes as growing out of a wall, used by the Israelites to put blood from the Passover lamb on the lintel and the two doorposts and to help sprinkle the blood on the book and the people (Exodus 12:22, 1 Kings 4:33 & Hebrews 9:19-22), and wormwood which is a very bitter plant that is used symbolically; And the third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters; and the name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood; and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter. (Revelation 8:10-11)
The vine, as Jesus compares Himself and the Christians as His branches; "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, and I in Him, he bears much fruit; fro apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned." (John 15:4-6)
Please note that the person must abide in the Lord first before the Lord will abide in us; "And I say to you, ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it shall be opened." (Luke 11:9-10)
So then, for the answer to our question we turn and read; Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. Now he shall be brought to the priest, and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper, then the priest shall give orders to take two live clean birds and cedar wood and a scarlet string and hyssop for the one who is to be cleansed. The priest shall also give orders to slay the one bird in an earthenware vessel over running water. As for the live bird, he shall take it together with the cedar wood and the scarlet string and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the live bird in the blood of the bird that was slain over the running water. He shall then sprinkle seven times the one who is to be cleansed from the leprosy, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the live bird go free over the open field." (Leviticus 14:1-7)
So there we have the answer to our question, as it was the hyssop that was used by the priest to sprinkle the blood of the slain bird over the one to be cleansed seven times and then pronounce him clean.
Interestingly enough, hyssop was also used while our Lord hung upon the cross; After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty." A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. (John 19:28-30).
