Welcome and thank you for taking a bible break to
test your knowledge of God's word.
This week's question:
This "mystery" has caught the attention of men of old who could only dream of who He might be, written by Prophets throughout the Old Testament peaking of One who is to come,
Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and
bear a son and will call His name Immune." (Immune is to say "God with us")
Malachi 3:1 "Behold, I am going to send My messenger, (John the Baptist) and he will clear the way
before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of His
covenant, in whom you delight , behold, He is coming," says the Lord of hosts.
Yes, "He is coming" and the prophets who wrote about Him wished to see and hear Him (Luke 10:24), the mystery only revealed some two thousand years later. That's a long time to sit around the campfire and talk of who He might be. So, to begin our search, we turn to the Ephesian letter where we see that God has made known the mystery of His will to us by listening to the "message of truth, the gospel of your salvation",
Ephesians 1:9-13 He made know to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He
purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of times, that is, the summing
up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him also we have obtained
an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel
of His will, to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. In
Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-having also believed,
you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
And let us continue to search the scriptures so the mystery may be truly unfolded. First Timothy 3:9 refers to it as the "mystery of faith". For indeed faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). The words of the gospel are "sound words and with the doctrine conforming to godliness" (1 Timothy 6:3). And now we turn to,
1 Timothy 3:16 By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the
flesh, was vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the
world, taken up in glory.
So, this mystery was to fulfill a tall order and was by no means any ordinary man. Paul's writing to the church at Colosse helps fully reveal the answer to us:
Colossians 1:25-27 Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God
bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, that
is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but now has been manifested
(made flesh) to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this
mystery among the gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Colossians 2:1-3 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who
are in Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be
encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full
assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery, that is Christ Himself, in
whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
And so, there we have our answer to today's question, the mystery that had been hidden from the eyes of men for so long has been revealed to us all from the mind of God to the good book that teaches us so well of Him, the Christ, our Lord and Savior who did become flesh, and was vindicated in the Spirit, beheld by angels, proclaimed by nations, believed in by men, and was taken up in glory!
We read in Colossians 2:6 "As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him." Paul again contends,
Ephesians 3:3-7 that by revelation there was made known to me the mystery, as I wrote to you in brief,
by referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight to the mystery of Christ, which in
other generations was not made known to men, as it has know been revealed to His holy apostles and
prophets in the Spirit; to be specific, that the gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body,
and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel, of which I was made a minister,
according to the gift of God's grace which was given to me according to the working of His power.
This gospel came to us that by studying it we may
understand and receive it, "
not as words of men, but for what
it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you
who believe."
(1 Thessalonians 2:13)
And so, we must ask ourselves, do we believe in the mystery that has been revealed through the gospel? For indeed it tells us that it will lead us to eternal life (1 John 5:13). What a grand promise!
